Kim was born on March 17, 1966, at Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Doris (Quandt) Handlos. Later that year her family moved to Audubon where she attended the Audubon Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1984. She then attended Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs studying to be an interpreter for the deaf and was then employed as a deaf interpreter for the Ames School District. Kim moved to Cedar Rapids and attended Mount Mercy College and received a Human Resource Degree and was employed by Social Services in Cedar Rapids. Due to her deteriorating health she was unable to work the last few years. Kim liked the color purple and enjoyed keeping in touch with friends on the computer, watching movies, and spending time with her two daughters. However, while a young girl on the farm Kim did not enjoy picking up rocks in the field and walking beans.
Survivors include her two daughters, Ashley Nicole Savala of Cedar Rapids and Natashea Ann Savala of Iowa City; her parents, Lawrence and Doris Handlos of Audubon; a sister, Beth Handlos of Ames; brothers, Brian Handlos and wife Patricia of Audubon, Kurt Handlos of Audubon, and Cory Handlos and wife Wendy of Audubon; nieces and nephews, Alexis Fassino, Jacob and Jordan Best, and Skyler and Josie Handlos; and her grandmother, Pearl Quandt of Carroll.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, John and Rosina Handlos and Harold Quandt; and by several aunts and uncles.
