Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

During Bernard’s lifetime, he farmed, had a dairy operation, had a cow/calf operation, and raised hogs. He retired in 1992. He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Kay and I have been very close for over 80 years. When we little my Mother dressed us alike. Some people thought we were twins. One time a new neighbor came running to my Mother and said “Do you have two little girls? This is the first time I saw them together. I always thought there was only one.” We did everything together, even when we were married. We made dresses alike for our daughters. One time when I lived in Des Moines, I had presents from Santa in my cedar chest and I forgot to lock it. When I went upstairs I discovered my two oldest girls were playing with the toys. I called Kay and we decided to exchange the toys with the ones she bought for her two girls. So we exchanged the toys by sending them on a Grey Hound Bus. Many times we talked about the time we exchanged Christmas gifts for our daughters. We never forgot to call each other on our birthday. I called her on January 17, her birthday, we had a good talk. There are so many things we shared; I’d have to write a book to include them all. I will always remain close to her in my prayers.

Sorry we could not be there with you today. I remember when we moved back to Carroll, from California in 1961. Aunt Kay welcomed all of us into her home. It was a little crowded with all of us there, together. That would be Aunt Geri and the six kids she had at the time. When Grandma (Amelia Mitchel) called and she asked Aunt Kay “Did everyone have a place to sleep?” Aunt Kay said “Well, I did, until I had to get up and answer the phone.” Someone had taken her place on the sofa. I remember Aunt Kay telling me that story. Aunt Kay always has a great since of humor. I can still hear her laughter. Her door was always open to us growing up in Carroll. I remember the barbeques she would have, after a long day at the swimming pool. Sometimes in the cold winter, we would just stop by Aunt Kay’s home, just to warm up. I did get the chance to talk to Aunt Kay last month, on her birthday. My mom (Geri Fitzsenry) had called her and I happened to be home from work that day. She was very happy. She said, Shannon had come over, with a huge lunch for her, and a cake. I have so many beautiful memories of Aunt Kay, it is impossible to write them all. Aunt Kay was so special to all of us, in so many ways. We will miss her very much. Susan Fitzsenry
