Kathleen “Kay” Theresa Simons was born on December 16, 1927, in Carroll, Iowa, the daughter of Clem and Leona Tigges (nee Liewer). She grew up on a farmstead near Willey during the great depression and then on a farmstead just south of Maple River. She was a graduate of St. Angela Academy (1945) and later graduated from the St. Anthony School of Nursing (1948) as a registered nurse.

On January 8, 1951, Kathleen was united in marriage to Marvin J. Simons by Reverand Peter Mattes at St. Francis Church, Maple River, Iowa. Following their honeymoon in Chicago, they made their home in the red brick house on the family farm where Marvin grew up, in Carroll. They were blessed with nine children and raised them in the Catholic tradition with Kay managing the household and Marvin managing the grain and livestock businesses.

Kay’s greatest joys arose from her family, faith, music, and reading. She led by example and instilled strong conservative values and a strong work ethic in all of her children. She loved to listen to music and to sing, she loved “bridge club” and playing euchre. She was an amateur meteorologist and would not miss the “weather report” on the radio or fail to report the weather when you called for a chat. She loved flowers, and watching the horse races with Marvin, in Hot Springs, AR every spring. Kay never forgot a family birthday or wedding anniversary as those cards arrived every year.

Kay’s Catholic faith was a vital part of her life. She always had a rosary in her hands and the TV tuned to the daily mass. Through the years she was active in The St. Lawrence Ladies Guild making sure each funeral had flowers and “prayers.” She loved singing in the choir at St. Lawrence. The legacy she leaves is grounded in selflessness and faith in God. Kay was an active member of St. Anthony Nurses Alumnae Association, St. Lawrence Parish and Ladies Guild and The Catholic Daughters of America.

Kay is survived by her sister, Sister Mildred Tigges FSPA of Lacrosse, WI; her sister-in-law, Ruth Tigges of Carroll, IA; her brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Pitner, of Omaha, NE; her children, Sarah (Jeffrey) Reed of Chicago, IL, Mary Ann (Lynn) Vea of Mokena, IL, Peter (Dr. Marcia Whited) Simons of Carroll, IA, John Simons of Glidden, IA, Paul (Margaret) Simons of Chicago, IL, Matthew (Trista) Simons of West Des Moines, IA; her son-in-law, Dan Fennell of Orono, MN and Palm Beach, FL; her grandchildren, Sarah Colleen Fennell of Minneapolis, MN, Henry F. Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

During Bernard’s lifetime, he farmed, had a dairy operation, had a cow/calf operation, and raised hogs. He retired in 1992. He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Bernard is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marita Meiners; his children, Dale (Mary) Meiners of Carroll, David (Jane) Meiners of Varna, IL, Cathleen (Larry) Nees of Coon Rapids, Christine (Mark) Schultes of Dedham, and Gary (Barb) Meiners of Manson; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren with 2 more coming in October; a brother Anthony (Colleen) Meiners of Carroll; 2 sisters, Catherine Wittrock of Carroll and Marcella Naberhaus of Carroll; his sisters-in-laws, Margaret (Tom) Denker of Manning, and Pat (Joe) Goblirsch of Jesup. My condolences to the Simon family. Kay and Marv were such dear friends of our mom and dad, and they cherished their friendship. Her obituary brought back many fond memories of Kay coming to our house for coffee and bridge! Kay was always endearing and kind and a friend to Dad to his last days. We always made it a point to visit her when we'd see Dad at assisted living. We will miss her! May she rest in the Lord's peace. With Love, Rae Ann (Kloser) Frank and family
