John Polking

Polking, who, at the age of 93, passed away on June 28, 2026, on Anna Maria Island, Fla., with his beloved wife, Agnes “Stevie” Coppin-Polking, at his side. John leaves behind a distinguished career in academia spanning more than five decades and a trail of devoted family and friends. From his roots on the family farm near the town of Breda in western Iowa to a prominent position at Rice University and years of traveling the world to teach and explore, John was a lifelong learner whose curiosity, persistence, and attention to detail never waned. He found enjoyment and fascination in all things new, especially rapidly evolving technologies. And he never met a puzzle he could not solve. Academic Achievements and Esteemed Career John is recognized for his contributions to mathematical analysis, particularly in harmonic analysis and operator theory, and for his work on educational mathematical tools such as MATLAB. After graduating from St. Bernard’s High School in Breda, John attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., where he received his Bachelor of Science in Physics, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1959 before attending graduate school at the University of Chicago, where he earned his PhD for a thesis on partial differential equations. John began his professional academic career in 1966 at Brandeis University, where he served as an instructor in Analysis and Mathematical Programming 5. From 1968 to 2004, he was a Professor at Rice University in Houston, where he contributed to harmonic analysis, operator theory, and spectral theory 7. He retained his rank of Professor Emeritus for the rest of his life and continued to teach one course each spring at Rice. John’s career thrived from his engagement with eminent mathematical institutions and associations. From 1981 to 1984, John served as the director of the Division of Mathematical Sciences at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C. He served the multi-year term while on leave from Rice University. John was elected as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) in 2013, part of the inaugural class, for his contributions to harmonic analysis, operator, and spectral theory 7. John was also a member of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) for 41 years, serving on the Board of Governors for 14 years, and was a member of the International Association of Mathematical Physics. He remained an active member of the Steering Committee for the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute, where he edited the Graduate Summer School Lecture Series. John authored or co-authored several textbooks, including Differential Equations, MATLAB Manual and Ordinary Differential Equations (MATLAB Curriculum Series). Life and Loves While some considered him a confirmed bachelor, John met the love of his life while touring Turkey in 2012 at the age of 78. Stevie Coppin and John wed in 2016 and took up dual residences on Anna Maria Island in the winter and in Knokke, Belgium, in the summer. John and Stevie traveled the world together, and John became a doting father and grandfather to Stevie's three children, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren (who called him "Papa John"). John joined a family who adopted him and gave him the respect and love reserved for a father and grandfather, included him in all family gatherings, and stood by him faithfully during his last illness. An adventure-seeker, John explored the world and made the most of every destination, meticulously documenting each experience in words and photographs. From river rafting in the Grand Canyon to hiking 100 kilometers of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain (when he was 83 years old) and countless excursions in between, John visited nearly every continent. John’s adventurous spirit extended to his love of food. He enjoyed researching pasta recipes and routinely made a new dish every week. He was also connoisseur of wines. The Family Historian and Keeper of Memories Born on June 6, 1934, John grew up on the farm his grandfather, Anton Polking, homesteaded. The farm was in the Polking family for 137 years. John treasured the farm’s history and made frequent trips back to Breda from his homes in Houston, Washington D.C., Anna Maria Island, and abroad for the rest of his life. John once told a family member that “almost everyone who begins to study family history has the same regret. We all wait until the best sources have left us.” John took it upon himself to painstakingly research and record the genealogy of both his father’s and his mother’s families. He also wrote about family history in story form, including his father’s experience in World War I. He made sure the family would have access to their history forever. Through his international travels, John built relationships with relatives in Germany and made enduring friendships in Knokke. His Belgian family remembers John as “very intelligent and humble.” John is preceded in death by his parents, Clement and Anna Polking, and five siblings: Phyllis Mae Polking, James Polking, William Polking (Margaret), Paul Polking (Joan), and Joseph Polking (Lynn). John will be lovingly missed by Stevie’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his nieces and nephews across the country. Funeral and Burial A Celebration of Life for John will take place on Anna Maria Island in the fall.
