John Carlin, age 91, of Breda, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
A funeral mass for John Carlin will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Fr. Mark Stoll. Music will be by Marcy Anderson. Lector will be Ed Rohner. Gift Bearers will be Lindsey Slater, Michelle Hoffman, Zachary Moss, Samantha Moss, Jacob Sander, Madilynn Fisher, Gracie Fisher, Cora Fisher, Andrea Sander, Kiana Rohner, Alexis Rohner, and Emmalynn Rohner. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Tom Moss, Brian Fisher, Russell Boes, and Bruce Boes. Burial will be at the parish cemetery with military honors conducted by the Breda American Legion. The Breda Catholic Order of Foresters will form an honor guard for the funeral mass.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda, after 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2017, where there will be a 5 p.m. Rosary, led by the Breda Catholic Order of Foresters, and a Christian Wake Service which will be held at 7 p.m.
Visitation will resume at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

John Martin Carlin was born on August 23, 1925 at Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was the son of Rocksford and Florence (Marten) Carlin. John graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1943, and immediately joined the United States Army to serve in WWII, where he served until his honorable discharge in 1947. After his service to our nation, John moved to Carroll, Iowa, and married Virginia Ricke on October 1, 1951 in Breda, Iowa. Shortly thereafter, John and Virginia moved to Breda where they raised their two children, Roxanne and Rick.
John worked for his father at Western Iowa Grocers in Carroll. He also worked in the clothing industry for several years. John owned Antique John’s in Breda from 1975 until it closed in 2010. John was very active in the community with service to St. Bernard’s Parish, the American Legion, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Elks Club.
John enjoyed the outdoors, his dogs, and stopping in at Red’s Place for the daily 3 p.m. update on the local happenings. He treasured his time with his two children, five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He particularly cherished spending time with his loving wife, Virginia. They loved to go dancing and also enjoyed their card club.
John was loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his wife Virginia Carlin of Breda; children: Roxanne Rohner and her husband Ed of Lake View, and Rick Carlin and his wife Ruth Fogler of Orrington, ME; grandchildren: Tracie (Tom) Moss of Winterset, Heather (Brian Fisher) of Carroll, Iowa, Tony (Michelle) Rohner of Bremerton, WA, Chris Fogler of Orrington, ME, and Kate Fogler of New York, NY; great-grandchildren: Lindsey (Sydney) Slater, Michelle (Josh) Hoffman, Zachary Moss, Samantha Moss, Jacob Sander, Madilynn Fisher, Gracie Fisher, Cora Fisher, Andrea Sander, Kiana Rohner, and Alexis Rohner, Emmalynn Rohner. Also surviving is John’s brother: Terry (Peggy) Carlin of Marlboro, MA.
John was preceded in death by his parents: Rocksford and Florence Carlin, his sister, June Shurts, and his parents-in-law: Arthur and Nellie Ricke.
