Jim Schmitt, age 61 of Carroll, died Thursday, January 10, 2013 at his residence in Carroll surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2013 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir with John Wagner as soloist. Mass servers will be: Madelyn, Mackenzie and Riley Hall. Lectors will be: Nicole Anderson, Paula Lee-Hall, and Mindy Skillen. Gift Bearers will be Jim’s children: Sam Schmitt and Anne Schmitt, and Jim’s grandson, Ian Schmitt. Eucharistic Ministers will be Susan Wessling and Margene Heisterkamp. Honorary Casket Bearers will be: Ron and Linda Schulte, John and Susan Wessling, Neil and Deb Kanne, Dean and Marsha Langenfeld, Dale Stork and Elaine Corsbie. Casket Bearers will be: Rod Hall, Steve Lee, Brian Lee, Curtis Anderson, Bob Sporrer, and Tim Heithoff. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3 p.m. on Sunday where there will be a Christian Wake Service at 5 p.m. by Holy Spirit Parish. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9 a.m. on Monday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

James M. Schmitt, son of Maurice “Mose” and Lois (Kerper) Schmitt was born on January 12, 1951 at Carroll, Iowa. Jim spent his entire lifetime in the Carroll Community and attended Sts. Peter and Paul Grade School and later graduated with the Class of 1969 from Kuemper Catholic High School. He then attended Iowa Lakes Community College and returned to the Carroll area. Jim was united in marriage to Lynn Eischeid on August 3, 1973 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. Throughout his working years Jim did masonry work for contractors in Carroll and for the past 12 years owned and operated Schmitt Construction with his son Sam. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, camping and a good card game. Jim loved spending time with his family and always enjoyed socializing, especially with his close friend group. He was a member of Holy Spirit Church in Carroll.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lynn Schmitt of Carroll; his children: Sam Schmitt of Carroll, and Anne Schmitt and fiancé Kelley McReynolds of Ankeny; his grandson, Ian Schmitt; his mother-in-law, Lillian Eischeid of Carroll; his sisters: Barb Lee of Kasson, MN, and Jane (Steve) Dickenson of Federal Way, WA; his sisters-in-law: Joan (Tom) Sporrer of Council Bluffs, and Wanda (Randy) O’Neill of Carroll; as well as several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Joseph Eischeid; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Lee.
