James Gehling, age 75 of Carroll, died Monday, May 9, 2011 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Boekelman. Mass Servers will be Sosie and Seth Gehling. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Sister Joann Gehling, F.S.P.A. Gift Bearers will be: Jean Gehling, Lisa Gehling, and Barb Seifert. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Sister Joann Gehling, F.S.P.A., and Diane Vonnahme. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Jim’s nieces and nephews. Casket Bearers will be Jim’s nephews: Matt Gehling, Tom Schmitz, Doug Gehling, Richard Gehling, Dan Gehling, and Kenny Gehling. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m., Wednesday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service by Holy Spirit Parish at 7 p.m. The casket will be taken to Holy Spirit Church at 8:30 a.m., Thursday to lie in state until time of the funeral mass. Born on April 27, 1936 at Carroll, Iowa, James Leon Gehling was the son of Herman and Genevieve (Gross) Gehling. Jim grew up in the Carroll area and attended Sts. Peter and Paul School. Following his formal education he farmed with his family. Jim served in the United States Army and was honorable discharged in 1959. Upon returning to Carroll he farmed for his entire lifetime in the Carroll area. In retirement Jim spent his winters in Mesa, Arizona. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, trips to the casino, playing bingo, listening to old time music, and in his younger years playing softball. Jim’s greatest joy was his family, especially spending time with his nieces and nephews. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll.
Survivors include three sisters: Rita Anstoeter of Carroll, Rose Ocken of Carroll, and Sister Joann Gehling, F.S.P.A. of Hiawatha; three brothers: Ed (Lorraine) Gehling of Carroll, Bob (JoAnn) Gehling of Carroll, Jerry (Kathy) Gehling of Phoenix, AZ; sisters in-law and brothers in-law: Linda Gehling of Carroll, Lillian Gehling of Grand Meadow, MN, Delores (Bob) Nagl of Carroll, Ed (Bonnie) Rasmussen of Newton; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Louise Schmitz, and Norma Rasmussen; three brothers: George, Vernon, and Carl Gehling; his brothers in-law: Walter Schmitz, Louis Anstoeter, and Wilfred Ocken.
