James Kanne, 87 of Carroll, Iowa, died early Thursday morning, October 6, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 10, 2011 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Lector for the funeral mass will be Jim’s son in-law, Phil Phillips. Gift Bearers will be Jim’s granddaughters: Leah Kanne, Julia Kanne, Emily Thams, Allison Schoonover, Heather Pressler, Amiee Hart, and Alison Kanne. Eucharistic Ministers will be Jim’s daughter, Michele Phillips and her husband Phil, and Jim’s daughter in-law, Joan Kanne. Honorary Casket Bearers will be: Jim Tierney, Paul Snyder, Ed Murphy, Neil Trobak, Bob Feldmann, Bob McKone, Stoney Neumayer, Bob Kloser, and Maurice Potthoff. Casket Bearers will be Jim’s grandsons: James Kanne, Joel Kanne, Anthony Kanne, Tyler Kanne, Elliot Kanne, Benjamin Kanne, Ryan Huegerich, and Cory Curfman. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll Amercian Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m., Sunday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m., by the Carroll Knights of Columbus followed by a Christian Wake Service by St. Lawrence Parish at 6 p.m. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for the St. Lawrence Second Century Campaign. Born on May 12, 1924 at Carroll, Iowa, James A. Kanne was the son of Anton and Mary (Wieland) Kanne. Jim attended St. Lawrence School and later graduated from Carroll High School with the Class of 1942. He then served in the United States Army during WW II in Africa and Italy. Following his honorable discharge Jim attended Creighton University. On December 30, 1950 he married Marcella Hannasch at Holy Angels Church in Roselle, Iowa. Jim and Marcella made their home in Carroll where he worked for Green Bay Lumber Company. In 1957 Jim started Kanne Lumber & Supply and also was a homebuilder and developer and was instrumental in the development of the Kanne Addition. For the last 20 years of his working career Jim worked for Robert’s & Dybdahl Wholesale Lumber Company as a lumber broker and designed Astro Buildings. Jim loved the community of Carroll and was active in many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Community of Concern, and the Carroll City Council for 12 years. He loved to golf and was a lifetime member of the Carroll Country Club. Jim enjoyed wine, and was devoted to his faith, family, friends, and loved football, football, and football. He was a lifelong member of St. Lawrence Parish, Carroll Knights of Columbus, Carroll American Legion, and the Carroll Country Club.
Survivors include his wife Marcella Kanne of Carroll; his children: Michele Phillips and her husband Phil of Carroll, Glenda Bruggeman and her husband Ron of Panora, Marty Kanne and his wife Mona of Kansas City, MO, Jeff Kanne and his wife Sarah of Gibson Island, MD, Dean Kanne and his wife Joan of Wooster, OH, Brian Kanne and his wife Janet of Omaha, NE, and Jeanne Curfman and her husband Bill of Omaha, NE; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Lois Bierl of Carroll, Lucille (Robert) Schaefer of Denver, CO, and Bernice Pudenz of Carroll; his brothers in-law and sisters in-law: Clair (Lota) Hannasch of Tracy, MN, Mary Milbauer of Milwaukee, WI, John Hannasch of Carroll, Charles (Dorothy) Hannasch of Lincoln, NE, George (Jan) Hannasch of Omaha, NE, Caroline Hermsen of Omaha, NE, Joan Hannasch of Rosemont, MN, Rachel Hannasch of Greenville, PA, and Shirley Hannasch of Huntington, Station, NY; as well as many nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
