Ione Janning, age 91, of Carroll, Iowa, and formerly of the Lidderdale community, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Holy Family Church in Lidderdale. The Celebrant will be Father Edmund Tiedeman. Lector will be a grandson, Michael Hackfort. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Kristy Hackfort, Brenda Janning, and Erica Janning. Eucharistic Ministers will be Leonard and Jean Grote and Joe Grote. Casket Bearers will be grandchildren, Paul Koster, Ann Danner, Sarah Strong, Jason Peacock, David Koster, Missy Janning, Brenda Janning, Nicholas Janning, Erica Janning, Michael Hackfort, Mark Hackfort, Tammy Hackfort, and Kristy Hackfort. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M. Tuesday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Tuesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Tuesday by Holy Family Parish. Mrs. Janning was born on July 4, 1917, at Breda, Iowa, the daughter of John H. and Mary (Determan) Wessling. She spent her younger years in the Breda community and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1935 and then worked at a millinery shop in Breda. On October 20, 1942, she was married to Norbert L. Janning at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The couple farmed in the Lidderdale area where they raised their family and in 1977 moved to their home in Lidderdale. She was a member of Holy Family Parish and Parish Rosary Sodality. Mrs. Janning enjoyed her family, gardening, cooking, baking, and visiting with relatives. Survivors include her children, Richard Janning and his wife Janet of Carroll, Mary Peacock and her husband Ray of Sioux City, Ione Koster and her husband John of Breda, Betty Hackfort and her husband Leon of Carroll, Joan Janning of Carroll, and Norbert A. Janning and his wife Colleen of LeMars; thirteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Bette Wessling of Littleton, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norbert Janning, in November 1996; a brother, Arnold F. Wessling; and sisters, Annabelle Wessling and Thelma Francis.
