Hugo Wessling, age 99, of Carroll, Iowa, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 A.M. Thursday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass. Lector will be Debra Anliker. Gift Bearers will be Joan Hanson, Sara Wessling, Rhonda Seidl, Abby Wessling, Luke Seidl, Corey Seidl, Tony Anliker, and Karen Anliker. Casket Bearers will be Nick Wessling, Adam Wessling, Michael Wessling, David Seidl, Terry Seidl, and Kyle Seidl. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Wednesday by the Carroll Knights of Columbus. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Wednesday by Holy Spirit Parish. Mr. Wessling was born on April 19, 1910, on the family farm southeast of Breda the son of Louis and Mary (Welte) Wessling. He attended St. Bernard School in Breda. On January 18, 1937, he was married to Hedwig “Hattie” Renze at Holy Angels Church in Roselle. The couple farmed near Westside and later moved to a farm southeast of Dedham. In 1959 they moved to a farm they purchased south of Westside. His first wife Hedwig died in April 1960. In 1966 Mr. Wessling retired from farming and moved to Carroll. On May 4, 1968, he was married to Mary Meyer in Kansas City, Kansas, and they made their home in Carroll. While living in Carroll he was employed as a custodian at Kuemper High School for many years. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and the Carroll Knights of Columbus. Mr. Wessling enjoyed special times with his family and friends, playing cards, and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Mary Wessling of Carroll; his children, Roselyn Seidl and her husband Lee of Joplin, Missouri, George Wessling and his wife Phyllis of Garner, Sister Darlene Wessling F.S.E. of Lowell, Mich., and John Wessling and his wife Susan of Carroll; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one great great grandson; a sister, Rita Grossman of Carroll; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hattie Wessling; his parents; a sister, Caroline Schreurs; and brothers, Alfred Wessling, Rudy Wessling, Ray Wessling, and Albin “Bud” Wessling.
