Helen Nieland, age 97, of Breda, Iowa, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Monday, March 2, 2009, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Father Joe Dillinger. Lectors will be Sister Ione Nieland and Ruth Tigges. Gift Bearers will be Julie Tigges-Bornong, Lori Snyder, Jan Stork, and Mary Jo Wellenstein. Eucharistic Ministers will be Sister Ione Nieland, Gene Nieland, and Ethel Unger. Casket Bearers will be Kevin Nieland, Dan Nieland, Steve Nieland, Doug Tigges, Dr. Michael Tigges, Dr. Russell Tigges, Peter Cousseau, Jr., and Paul Unger. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 2:30 P.M. Sunday. A rosary will be prayed at 3 P.M. Sunday by St. Bernard Ladies Guild. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Sunday by St. Bernard Parish. Mrs. Nieland was born on February 16, 1912, at Maple River, Iowa, the daughter of Joe and Mary (Lemker) Sander. She spent her younger years in the Maple River community and attended St. Francis School. Following her formal education she performed domestic work for several families in the area. On January 17, 1933, she was married to Lawrence Nieland at St. Francis Church in Maple River. The couple farmed southeast of Breda where Mrs. Nieland raised their family and was a homemaker. In January 2003 the Nielands celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. She was a member of St. Bernard Parish and Parish Ladies Guild. Mrs. Nieland enjoyed her family, gardening, growing flowers, playing cards, embroidery, and crocheting. Survivors include her children, Gene Nieland and his wife Becky of Breda, Ruth Tigges and her husband Leon of Carroll, Lois Cousseau and her husband Peter of New York City, Sister Ione Nieland F.S.P.A. of Carroll, Ethel Unger and her husband Tom of Silverton, Oregon, and Duane Nieland of Carroll; 18 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Frances Sander of Carroll. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence Nieland, in October 2003; a son, Larry Nieland; daughter-in-law, Connie Nieland; brothers, Joe, Leonard, Alois, and Tony Sander; and sisters, Johanna Middendorf, Caroline Leiting, Marie Ludwig, Bertha Vonnahme, and Viola Sander, in infancy.
