Born on March 3, 1917 at Fonda, Iowa, Helen was the daughter of John and Laura (Quirk) Finegan. At a young age her family moved to the Carroll community where Helen attended St. Joseph’s School and later graduated from St. Angela Academy with the Class of 1935.
She worked in sales at Kelly Shoe Store for many years where she met her husband Jim and the couple were married on May 28, 1963 at St. Francis Chapel in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Helen and Jim made their home on the Wieland family farm two miles east of Carroll where Jim was engaged in grain and livestock farming. In 1981 the couple moved from the farm into Carroll.
Helen enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, walking, and took a tremendous amount of pride in her Irish Heritage. With a strong devotion to her faith, Helen was active in Holy Spirit Parish where she was a longtime member of the choir, as well as a member of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary and Legion of Mary. She was honored in 2012 by the auxiliary for being one of its founding members and for her role as one of the organizers of the hospital’s gift shop.
Helen is survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James Wieland in 1992; her sister Alice Kelly; and her brother, Merle John Finegan.
