Helen Bromert was born on April 12, 1914, near Maple River, Iowa, the daughter of Frank J. and Margaret (O’Donnell) Bromert. She spent most of her lifetime in the Maple River community and attended St. Francis School and graduated from Carroll High School in 1932. Miss Bromert assisted her brother Loras and sister Margaret in farming their Century Farm north of Maple River. In November 1983 she moved with her brother and sister to their home in Carroll. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Parish Ladies Guild. During her lifetime Helen enjoyed fishing, trapping, going on family vacations, reading, gardening, watching birds and squirrels, practicing her Catholic faith, praying the rosary, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. One of her favorite holidays was St. Patrick’s Day and she enjoyed celebrating the day with a green beer and listening to the Irish music of Danny O’Donnell. She often wondered if she was related to him. Helen rarely complained and was always welcoming when she had a visitor. She had a tremendous sense of humor and quick wit. Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Mary K. Tigges and her husband Jerry of Carroll, Margaret Ann Tigges of Omaha, Nebr., Robert John Bromert and his wife Liz of Pensacola, Florida, Ruth Bromert-Sather and her husband Gordon of Blair, Nebr., Phyllis Pirotte and her husband Larry of Iowa City, Pitter Irlmeier and her husband Mudd of Carroll, James Blum of Spirit Lake, and Jean Bromert of Earlham; and many great nieces and nephews.
