Gerald “Jerry” Tigges, 76 of Carroll died early Friday morning, April 6, 2012 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Con-Celebrants will be: Fr. James Tigges, Fr. Robert Gralapp, and Fr. Ed Tiedeman. Organist will be Jerry’s niece, Anne Tigges. Vocalists will be Jerry’s granddaughter, Amanda Donovan, Jerry’s son-in-law, Bill Schreck, Jerry’s niece, Kristie Tigges, and Jerry’s nephew, Marty Tigges. Mass Servers will be Ericka Tigges and Megan and Jacob Wallace. Lectors for the funeral mass will be Jerry’s granddaughters, Megan Reis and J.J. Schreck. Gift Bearers will be Jerry’s granddaughters: Carley Collison, Emily Dvorak, Miley Tigges and Kaitlyn Tigges. Eucharistic Ministers will be Jerry’s sisters, Mary Jane Schenkelberg and Ruth Ann Tigges. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Jerry’s grandsons: B.J. Schreck, Frank Tigges, Nick Tigges, Jackson Tigges, Jon Dvorak, and Brendan Collison. Casket Bearers will be Jerry’s sons: Greg Tigges, Pat Tigges, and Chris Tigges, and Jerry’s sons-in-law: Bill Schreck, Jeff Dvorak, and Nick Collison. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at Carroll, with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. on Monday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Carroll Knights of Columbus and a Christian Wake Service by Holy Spirit Parish at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9 a.m. Tuesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born on August 15, 1935 at Carroll, Iowa, Gerald C. was the son of Alphonse and Elizabeth (Scharfenkamp) Tigges. Jerry attended grade school at St. Mary’s School in Willey and later graduated from Carroll High School with the Class of 1953. Following his formal education Jerry served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1957. On September 26, 1959 he married Mary K. Bromert at Sacred Heart Church in Boone. Jerry and Mary made their home Northeast of Willey where Jerry was a grain and livestock farmer. In 1999 they moved to Carroll and Jerry still remained active in the family farm operation. Throughout his lifetime he was active coaching Little League, Past President of Kuemper Parents Club, and Past Commander of the Carroll American Legion. Jerry enjoyed socializing and playing cards with his friends, but most of all loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Carroll Knights of Columbus, Carroll American Legion, Maurice Dunn Post # 7, lifelong member of St. Mary’s Parish in Willey, and currently a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll.
Jerry is survived by his wife Mary K. Tigges of Carroll; his children: Shell Schreck and her husband Bill of Dedham, Greg Tigges and his wife Joni of DeWitt, Lynne Dvorak and her husband Jeff of Carroll, Melissa Collison and her husband Nick of Thornton, CO, Pat Tigges and his wife Alie of Carroll, and Chris Tigges and his wife Beth of Carroll; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters: Don (Mary) Tigges of Carroll, Ruth Ann Tigges of Manning, Carolyn Sovich of Ormond Beach, FL, Mary Jane (Morrie) Schenkelberg of Sioux City, and Rosalie Davis of Omaha; his sister-in-law, Velma Tigges of Carroll, as well as many nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother Walt Tigges; brother-in-law, Frank Sovich; and his parents-in-law, Eddie and Lou Bromert.
