George “Shorty” Grossman Sr., 91 of Dedham, died Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 9, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dedham. The Celebrant will be Fr. Andrew Hoffmann assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners. Lector for the funeral mass will be Art Behrens. Gift Bearers will be George’s grandchildren: Mike Grossman and Julie Buenzow, and George’s great-grandchildren: Ella, Hanna, and Landen Grossman, and Coleman and Abby Buenzow. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Joe Ankenbauer and Dale Sporrer. Casket Bearers will be: Paul Sporrer, Randy Irlbeck, Dave Grossman, Larry Klocke, Daryl Fischer, and Marvin Wurzer. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Dedham with military honors conducted by the Dedham American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 p.m., Sunday where there will be a rosary at 3 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service by the parish at 5 p.m.

Born on February 27, 1920 at Willey, Iowa, George was the son of George and Mary (Hackfort) Grossman. He attended school in Dedham and Willey. George married Marcella Hansman on April 22, 1941 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willey. He worked at the gravel pits in Willey before entering the United States Navy in March of 1943. George took basic training in Farragut, Idaho and then advanced training at the University of Missouri and Detroit, Michigan. He was later stationed in Virginia and Florida with a tour on the U.S.S. Valeria. George was discharged on November, 25 1945 and upon his return he started farming west of Dedham. In the summer he enjoyed softball games, and baseball games on television, in between growing tomatoes in his garden. George loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Audubon V.F.W., Dedham American Legion, and St. Joseph’s Parish in Dedham.
Survivors include his children: Sharon Grossman of Des Moines; George Grossman Jr. and his wife Donna of Dedham; two grandchildren: Mike (Kathy) Grossman of Urbandale, and Julie (Ben) Buenzow of Ankeny; five great-grandchildren: Ella, Hanna, and Landen Grossman, and Coleman and Abby Buenzow; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Phyllis Sibenaller of Roselle, Arlene (Don) Behrens of Carroll, Margaret (Jim) Behrens of Carroll, and Bob Hansman of Phoenix, AZ; as well as other extended relatives.
George was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years Marcella; his sisters: Agnes Wurzer, Alvina Klocke, and Frances Grossman.
