Frank J. Hoffman, age 88, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Monday, June 29, 2009, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father John Gerald. The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 A.M. Thursday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass. Lector will be a son-in-law, Jim Arts. Gift Bearers will be grandchildren, Heather Richeson, Alison Hoffman, Elizabeth Arts, Andrew Arts, Nathan Schroeder, Adrianne Schroeder, and Jonathan Schroeder. Casket Bearers will be Dave Schwaller, Stan Romey, Nick Romey, Dean Schoeppner, Mark Kitt, and Dale Derner. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 P.M. Wednesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Wednesday by Holy Spirit Parish. Mr. Hoffman was born on May 12, 1921, at Dedham, Iowa, the son of Frank S. and Mary E. (Golwitzer) Hoffman. He spent most of his lifetime in the Dedham community and attended St. Joseph School and graduated from Carroll High School in 1940. On September 22, 1942, he was married to Madeline “Midge” Schwaller at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton with Msgr. F.H. Huesmann officiating. Mr. Hoffman was the third generation to farm their Century Farm north of Dedham. The Hoffman’s retired in 1985 and moved to their home in Carroll. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, Carroll County Farm Bureau, and former Newton Township Trustee. He enjoyed farming and having coffee with his many friends. Survivors include his wife Madeline “Midge” Hoffman of Carroll; two daughters, Francie Schroeder and her husband Steve of Georgetown, Texas, and Jane Arts and her husband Jim of Omaha, Nebr.; a son, Todd Hoffman and his wife Julie of Dedham; eight grandchildren, Sherry Van Nice and her husband John, Brett Beck and his wife Cathryn, Nathan Schroeder and his wife Adrianne, Jonathan Schroeder, Elizabeth Arts and her fiancé Ben Stueve, Andrew Arts, Heather Richeson and her husband Justin, and Alison Hoffman; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Gloria.
