Eugene “Gene” Huelshorst, 84, of Carroll, died Sunday, November 17, 2013, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, November 21, 2013 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence Choir with Kathleen Macke as song leader. Mass servers will be Jacob Schreck and Michael Schreck. Lector will be Diane Hannasch. Gift Bearers will be Neil and Jean Ludwig. Eucharistic Ministers will be Gene’s nieces, Kathy Puck, and JoAnn Patzner, as well as Diane Hannasch. Honorary Casketbearers will be Gene’s nieces and nephews. Casketbearers will be Gene’s nephews: Jim Lampe, Dave Tigges, Ron Willenborg, Wesley Willenborg, Rick Willenborg, and Dennis Naber. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Carroll. Military honors will be conducted by the Arcadia American Legion, and the Manning V.F.W.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 after 3:30 p.m. where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service by St. Lawrence Parish at 6 p.m. The casket will be moved to church at 9 a.m. on Thursday where visitation will resume until the time of the funeral mass.

Born on November 10, 1929, in Carroll, Eugene was the son of Conrad and Lena (Bergman) Huelshorst. He attended St. John’s School in Arcadia. Gene proudly served our country as a medic for the United States Navy in the Korean War. On May 17, 1958 he was united in marriage to Elaine Willenborg at Sacred Heart Church in Manning, Iowa. The couple made their home in Carroll. Gene owned and operated Gene Huelshorst Painting in Carroll, as well as the bowling alley in Arcadia, with his wife Elaine, for several years. Gene was an accomplished finishing woodworker, and enjoyed sharing the beauty of his work for all to see. He was an ardent Iowa Hawkeye Fan, holding season tickets for both football and basketball. He attended every home football game for thirty years. Over the years Gene and Elaine traveled to many away football games as well as many of the bowl games. Gene along with Darwin Bunger are credited for starting the Carroll Area I Club. He also was an avid golfer, scoring a hole-in-one twice over the years. Gene was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Arcadia American Legion, Manning V.F.W., Carroll Area I Club, Woodman of the World, and the Carroll Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife Elaine of Carroll; a sister, Regina Ludwig of Carroll; his in-laws: Bernice Naber of Carroll, Leo (Darlene) Willenborg of Manning, Tarsall Lampe of Wisconsin, Edna (Ray) Tigges of Cedar Rapids, Henry, Jr. (Ardella) Willenborg of Manning, Norma Willenborg, of Omaha, NE, and Marvin Lampe of Carroll; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Theresa Berns, Francis Huelshorst, Vincent Huelshorst, and a sister in infancy; a brother and sister-in-law: Jeanette Lampe, and Marvin Willenborg.
