Edward G. Wieland, age 97, of Carroll, Iowa, died Sunday, November 23, 2008, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Saturday, November 29, 2008, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Kari Zelinskas. Gift Bearers will be Lori Wilkens, Rita Wieland, and Molly Zelinskas. Eucharistic Ministers will be Kathy Wieland, Mary Jo Wieland, and Jeanine Stilwill. Casket Bearers will be Mark Wilkens, Paul Wilkens, Tony Zelinskas, Andrew Zelinskas, Sam Wilkens, Jordan Wilkens, Brian Wieland, and Marco Wieland. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Friday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Friday by the Carroll Knights of Columbus. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Friday by St. Lawrence Parish. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the American Cancer Society. Mr. Wieland was born on April 26, 1911, at Carroll, Iowa, the son of George S. and Laura (Heires) Wieland. He spent his lifetime in the Carroll community and attended country school and Carroll High School. On February 5, 1936, he was married to Mabel Frances Collison at St. Joseph Church in Carroll with Msgr. Patrick Lynch officiating. The couple farmed west of Carroll on old Highway 30 until 1982 when they retired and moved to their home in Carroll. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Wieland enjoyed his family, farming, and growing roses and other flowers. Survivors include his daughter, Laura Fudge and her fiancé Gordon Bruce of Syracuse, New York; a son, Robert E. Wieland of Hemet, Calif.; grandchildren, Mark Wilkens and his wife Lori of Altoona, Paul Wilkens of Altoona, Kari Zelinskas and her husband Tony of Dubuque, Brian Wieland of Hemet, Calif., Marco Wieland of Hemet, Calif., and Rita Wieland of Hemet, Calif.; four great grandchildren; a brother, Robert Wieland and his wife Evelyn of Carroll; sister, Marie Eich of Ackley; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel Wieland, in March 1983; four children in infancy; a grandson, Michael Wieland; brothers, Arthur, Harold, and Norbert Wieland; and sisters, Marguerite Madigan, Dorothy Madigan, and Beatrice Wess.
