Dorothy Behrens

Dorothy Behrens, age 83, of Carroll, Iowa, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a five month battle with cancer. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Thursday, January 14, 2010, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Ron Eich. Gift Bearers will be grandchildren, Lyndi Steger, Brenna Behrens, Lea Behrens, Kayla Pietig, Erin Holmes, Alex Holmes, and Tess Behrens. Eucharistic Ministers will be Jayne Pietig, Kevin Pietig, and Ken Behrens. The Carroll Catholic Daughters of America and Dedham American Legion Auxiliary will form an honor guard at the church. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Chris Behrens, Curt Behrens, Chad Behrens, Joe Behrens, Jed Behrens, Jon Behrens, Jes Behrens, Brian Behrens, Bruce Behrens, Zach Behrens, Tate Behrens, R.J. Pietig, Craig Pietig, Cory Pietig, and Jacob Holmes. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Wednesday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Wednesday by the Carroll Catholic Daughters of America. There will be a Christian wake service at 6:30 P.M. Wednesday by St. Lawrence Parish. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for St. Anthony Hospice or the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation. Mrs. Behrens was born on November 11, 1926, at Willey, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Emma (Kennebeck) Kraus. She spent her younger years in the Willey and Lidderdale communities and attended Lidderdale Country School and Holy Family School. On November 16, 1949, she was married to Harry O. Behrens at Holy Family Church in Lidderdale with Father Lawrence Schoeppner officiating. The couple farmed west of Templeton where Dorothy raised their family and was a homemaker. In 1984 the Behrens’ moved to their home in Carroll. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, Dedham American Legion Auxiliary, and Carroll Catholic Daughters of America. Mrs. Behrens enjoyed her family, flowers, gambling, and playing cards. Survivors include her children, Randy Behrens and his wife Jean of Manning, Ken Behrens and his wife Vicki of Templeton, Glenn Behrens and his wife Sue of Templeton, Jayne Pietig and her husband Kevin of Carroll, David Behrens and his wife Patsy of Andover, Minn., Connie Holmes and her husband Dan of Shenandoah, and Keith Behrens and his special friend Marianne Catapano of Maple Grove, Minn.; twenty-two grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; a sister, Louise Owens of Carroll; brothers, Al Kraus and his wife Irene of Maple River, Merle Kraus and his wife Mary Lou of Anita, and Bob Kraus and his wife Kathy of Carroll; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Norma Kraus of Denison, Florine Eich of Carroll, Rita Vonnahme of Arcadia, Donald and Arlene Behrens of Carroll, James and Margaret Behrens of Carroll, and Virgene Behrens of Carroll. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry O. Behrens, in May 2003; her parents; a grandson, Brett Behrens; brother, Paul Kraus; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Behrens, Virgil Behrens, Louise Behrens, Harold Eich, James Owens, Erwin Vonnahme, and Marie and Ed Siepker; and by her father and mother-in-law, Henry and Mayme Behrens.
