Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

We remember the many Birthdays and Anniversaries we celebrated together. We had a great group and had a lot of fun. Going out to eat and then back to the house and playing pitch until the wee hours. Many laughs and jokes and enjoyed them all. Also remember the crazy Halloween costumes we all came up with and the fun we had trick or drinking??? You were also great neighbors!! Sympathy and prayers to the family! Bob and Audrey

As I pause, remembering how our family's lives overlapped along Hawthorne Ave. over the years, I recall walking beans, trapping your creek, sharing rides with your girls to piano lessons, and riding the bus - trying not to back over your mailbox. But when it comes to Don I most remember his laugh while playing cards with my folks and the rest of the neighbors. Peace to Don and your family. Janet (Stitz) and Rick Muhlbauer

Sympathies to the Behrens family~ Sorry to hear of your loss. Growing up on the same trek of gravel, I recall most the nights when Don/Arlene - and other friends would come over to our house to play cards. Loved it!! That meant we could hang a little and get a few chuckles out of the group....AND get grasshopper/ice cream. I enjoyed helping babysit Vern/Becky's kids through the years - and running past Don here/there on the farm. Super nice fellow - GREAT people.....cherished friends. May Don's light continue to shine bright in you all~ Pam (Stitz) & Chris Kitt

We would like to express our sincere condolences to you and your family. With deep sympathy, we share your sorrow, after the tears have dried and the goodbyes have been said, all we have to hold onto are the happy memories that we’ve shared with our loved ones who have passed, this is what keeps them alive in our hearts and in our minds, and they will continue to live on, through us. May God give you the strength to endure the pain you are going through and may he embrace you and comfort your family during this difficult time."Jesus said to her: 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.'"-John 11:25
