Clarence Wernimont, age 80, of Carroll, Iowa, died Monday, February 22, 2010 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Friday, February 26, 2010 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Brian Skalla. Gift Bearers will be Clarence’s God children: Matt Riesenberg, Steve Riesenberg, Amy Taggart, and Michelle Gustfason. Mass Servers will be Chloe Riesenberg, and Ashley and Kelsey Blum. Eucharistic Ministers will be Shirley Rupiper, and Bob and Irene Schroeder. Honorary Pallbearers will be Clarence’s nieces and nephews. Casket Bearers will be nieces and nephews: Richard Wernimont, Angela Wernimont, Michelle Gustfason, Rachelle Lehman, Scott Lehman, David Skalla, Tom Riesenberg, Ron Riesenberg, and Russell Riesenberg. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 P.M., Thursday where there will be a rosary prayed at 3 P.M. by the Carroll Knights of Columbus. There will be a Christian Wake Service at 6 P.M. by St. Lawrence Parish. Memorials may be directed to the Kuemper Catholic Schools Foundation or St. Lawrence Second Century Campaign.
Clarence W. Wernimont was born on December 17, 1929, at Auburn, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Anna (Kohorst) Wernimont. He grew up in the Auburn area and attended Auburn public schools, later graduating from Carroll High School with the Class of 1948. Following high school Clarence served in the United States Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean War, before being honorable discharged shortly after the armistice was signed. Clarence was married to Laura Riesenberg on June 18, 1957 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Roselle, Iowa. The couple made their home in Chicago for nearly 17 years where Clarence became an avid Chicago Cubs fan. In 1973 Clarence and Laura returned to Iowa and made their home in Lake City. The Wernimont’s owned and operated True Value Hardware Store in Lake City until 1998 when they moved to Carroll. Clarence enjoyed bowling and golfing in his younger years, but most of all enjoyed his family. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Carroll Knights of Columbus, and the Carroll American Legion, Maurice Dunn Post # 7.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Wernimont of Carroll; his brothers and sisters: Victor Wernimont and his wife Florence of Carroll, Virgil Wernimont and his wife Donna of Grand Prairie, TX, Lois Skalla of Scranton, Franklin Wernimont of Minn, MN, Shirley Rupiper of Okoboji, Floyd Wernimont and his wife BJ of Ft. Collins, CO, Dennis Wernimont and his wife Lois of Kansas City, MO, and Marilyn Stahl and her husband Joe of Laguna Hills, CA; his brother-in-law, Lavern Riesenberg and his wife Theresa of Halbur; his sister-in-law, Irene Schroeder and her husband Bob of Arcadia, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Joseph in infancy.
