Born on January 7, 1927 at Arcadia, Iowa, Clara was the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Hoelscher) Dentlinger. Clara spent her younger years in the Arcadia area and attended St. John School.
On June 15, 1948, she was united in marriage to Elmer Friedman at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia. Following their marriage the couple resided in the Carroll community where they were co-owners of the Coast-to-Coast hardware store for 42 years. Clara and Elmer were happily married almost 52 years before his passing on April 29, 2000.
Clara was a devoted homemaker and housewife, raising her nine children over many years. She enjoyed fishing, the Chicago Cubs, and tending to her small flower and vegetable garden. Clara was a serene, patient, kind, and nonjudgmental person. ‘Content’ is the word we think of when remembering our beautiful mother. She never liked to draw attention to herself. Even on her last conscious days, the caretakers at St. Anthony told us she complained of no pain.
Clara had a deep devotion to her faith and was an active parishioner over the years at St. Lawrence Parish, where she served in various capacities, including parish ladies guild and Eucharistic Minister.
Clara is survived by her children: Beverly (Wayne) Bargren of Altamonte Springs, FL, Jan Friedman (John Kramer) of Iowa City, Deb (Scott) DeKok of Wauwatosa, WI, Bob (Peggy) Friedman of Johnston, Rick (Carol) Friedman of Denver, CO, Pat Friedman of Rancho Bernardo, CA, Lori (Phil) Price of Encinitas, CA, and Greg (Eilin) Friedman of Rancho Bernardo, CA; 16 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; her siblings: Lawrence (Arlene) Dentlinger of Arcadia, Al (Izzie) Dentlinger of Westside, and Joni Badding of Carroll; her sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws: Elaine Dentlinger of Carroll, Mildred Schreck of Carroll, Sister Maria Friedman, FSPA of Lacrosse, WI, Wilma (Cletus) Irlbeck of Omaha, NE, Phyllis Friedman of Carroll, and Doris (Pat) Riordan of Rock Hill, SC; as well as other extended relatives.
Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elmer; her son Fred Friedman; her brother Elmer Dentlinger; and her sisters: Martha Daniel, Ruth Schreck, and a sister Mary in infancy.
