Arnold Nieland, age 95, of Auburn, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, January 15, 2011, at St. Mary’s Church in Auburn. The Celebrant will be Father Lynn Bruch. Lector will be Arnold’s son, Randy Nieland. Gift Bearers will be grandchildren, Mikayla Nieland and Tia Nieland. Mass Servers will be great grandchildren, Tyler Nieland and Matthew Nieland. Eucharistic Ministers will be Arnold’s sons, Don Nieland and Randy Nieland, and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Nieland. Casket Bearers will be Paul Siegner, Jamie Nieland, Kevin Nieland, Tanner Nieland, Doug Baumhover, and Todd Roland. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery near Auburn.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Friday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Friday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Friday by St. Mary’s Parish.
Arnold Nieland was born on December 1, 1915, at Breda, Iowa, the son of Frank and Mary (Naberhaus) Nieland. He spent his lifetime in the Breda and Auburn communities and attended Country School and St. Bernard School in Breda. Following his formal education he worked as a farm hand in the area. Arnold and Germaine Schelle were married on April 8, 1940, at St. Mary’s Church in Auburn. The couple farmed east of Lidderdale and south of Breda before settling on the family farm southwest of Auburn. In 1989 the Nieland’s moved to their home in Auburn and in May 2007 they moved to St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. He was a member of St. Mary’s Parish at Auburn and served his parish as an usher and kept the records for St. Mary’s Cemetery. He was also a member of the Auburn Lions Club and was a past president of the Senior Citizen Housing in Auburn. Arnold dearly loved his family and enjoyed working, farming, fishing, dancing, playing cards, snowmobiling, and was a great checker player.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Germaine Nieland of Auburn; four sons, Jerry Nieland and his wife Carolyn of Auburn, Allen Nieland and his wife Dianne of Carroll, Randy Nieland and his wife Debbie of Auburn, and Don Nieland and his wife Laurie of Auburn; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marie Nieland of Storm Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Michael Venteicher; his brothers, Norbert Nieland and Richard Nieland; and sisters, Sister Mary Anthusa F.S.P.A., Julia Poeppe, Elinore Vonnahme-Nees, Marie Reineke, Genevieve Whitcher-Lammers, and a sister in infancy.
