Allan Ludwig

Allan Ludwig, 79 of Carroll, died peacefully, late Friday evening, March 11, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Craig Collison. Music will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence Choir with Jake Gute as cantor. Lectors for the funeral mass will be: Andrea Schroeder, Amy Noel, Katie Buttolph, and Lauren Janning. Gift Bearers will be: Kelsey Buttolph, Jessica Ludwig, and Ariel Ludwig. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Cecilia Thelen, Rosemary Possehn and Loras Hoffmann. Casket Bearers will be: Nick Ludwig, Jason Ludwig, Scott Ludwig, Chris Janning, Ethan Ludwig, Isaac Ludwig, Caleb Schroeder, and Justin Noel. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4:30 p.m. on Monday where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. by the Carroll Knights of Columbus and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. by St. Lawrence Parish. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church on Tuesday morning where visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. until time of the funeral mass. Born on December 25, 1936 in Carroll, Iowa, Allan was the son of Irwin and Violet (Dierenfeld) Ludwig. Allan attended school in Glidden and later at St. Bernard’s School in Breda. Following his schooling he held various jobs in the Carroll area. On February 5, 1957 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Thelen at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church with Fr. Othmar Koester officiating. Allan and Mary resided in Carroll and he was employed with Witt Flooring Company out of Davenport, Iowa. He later managed the Standard Gas Station in Carroll and finished his working career as owner and operator of Ludwig Construction with his sons, retiring in 2006. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing cards. Allan loved spending time with his family and was a devoted, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Allan was a member of St. Lawrence Church and the Carroll Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Ludwig of Carroll; his children: Paul (Gloria) Ludwig of Carroll, Larry Ludwig (Sharon Hofmann) of Carroll, Mike (Kathy) Ludwig of Springfield, MO, Connie (Keith) Janning of Carroll, and Karen (Ross) Buttolph of Ankeny; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; his sisters: Marilyn Muhlbauer of Vail, Joan (Jim) Maciupa of Montgomery, AL, and Sharon (Gary) Faber of Wall Lake; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Norman Thelen of Carroll, Eugene (Kay) Thelen of Marshalltown, Sylvester Jr (Kay) Thelen of Templeton, Ralph Thelen of Davenport, Lawrence (Cecelia) Thelen of Vail, Jean Thelen of Anita, Florence Thelen of Atlantic and Lynette (Mike) Schaffer of Omaha; as well as other extended relatives and many friends. Allan was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary in infancy; his step-mother, Mary (Faber) Ludwig; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Dave Muhlbauer, Marlene Thelen, Donna Thelen, Mavis Thelen, Norbert Thelen, Gerald Thelen, Linda (John) Hoffmann, and Marcile (Alfred) Hoffmann.
