Born on November 26, 1919 at rural Fonda, Iowa, Alice Kathryn was the daughter of John and Laura (Quirk) Finegan. Alice developed her well-mannered ways under the auspices of the feisty nuns at St Angela Academy in Carroll. She developed an amazing love of life and tremendous propensity to befriend every person that came in reach of her fantastic story telling ability.
On February 4, 1946 Alice married Arnold Kelly at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Carroll. They brought into the world 5 children….…….Mike, Tim, Denny, Kevin and “by- god finally a girl” named Kathleen. These 5 souls kept the game going by having 13 kids who matched the play with 13 more of their own. Alice helped her husband with the Ford Garage at Lake View for 35 years where they partnered with Mel and Ginny Broich.
Anyone reading this obituary at some point in their life got a dozen chocolate chip cookies, scrubber, blanket, birthday card, fresh baked bread or a hot meal from Alice. She made sure that everyone felt special and was accounted for.
It’s amazing that every church in Sac and Carroll County didn’t burn down based on all the memorial and prayer candles Alice lit over her 93 years. If half the people she prayed for made it to heaven they certainly must have had to put on a new addition to accommodate just her crew. Alice was very proud of her family’s Irish heritage and still holding down the Finegan name to this day is Alice’s sister Helen Finegan Wieland who can be caught cruising the halls of St Anthony Nursing home at the age of 96.
What a wonderful spirit. What a wonderful person. After any conversation with this lady dressed in green you always walked away with a smile in your heart and a lift in your step. She had the MAGIC !!!!
May we all who shared in Alice’s fine touch for the human spirit carry her loving mission forward as we celebrate being able to call her a “good friend”. Alice was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll and the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary. Survivors include her children: Michael Finegan Patrick Kelly of Bloomington, MN, Timothy Joseph Kelly and wife Lonnie of Farmington, MN, Dennis William Kelly of Johnston, Kevin Arnold Kelly and wife Carol of Agency, and Kathleen Reinhardt and husband Bob of Lakeville, MN; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Wieland of Carroll; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.
