Mary Lou Harman, 88, of Carroll, died Tuesday, November 28, 2017, in Des Moines, Iowa, surrounded by her family following a brief illness. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2017 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Marcy Anderson, Sherry Loughran and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lectors for the funeral mass will be: Anne Baughman and Emily Harman. Gift Bearers will be: Shannon Hammen-Miner, Katie Hammen, and Sarah Baughman. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Michael Harman, Sandy Harman, and Dr. Marty Halbur. Honorary Casket Bearers will be: Bernard Kadolph, Larry Kadolph, Ronald Kadolph, and Rita (Kadolph) Allen. Casket Bearers will be: Christopher Hammen, Matt Hammen, Michael Baughman, Tyler Harman, Ben Harman, Andrew Wood, Charlie Miner, and Tyler O’Brien. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m., Saturday at St. Mary's Cemetery in Eldora, Iowa. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 p.m. on Friday where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 6 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church on Saturday morning where visitation will resume at 9 a.m. and will continue until time of the funeral mass. Mary Lou was born on Nov 21, 1929 at the family farm in Hardin County, Iowa to Albert and Lela (Fuller) Kadolph. She grew up on that farm surrounded by her beloved brothers and younger sister. She attended Owasa schools, Iowa State Teacher’s College, and upon graduation became an elementary teacher. She married Donald Harman on August 12th, 1950 and to this union were born five children; Mark, Jeanne, Joyce, Michael, and Jeffrey. The family lived in Evansdale, IA; Cedar Falls, IA; Coldwater, MI; and finally settled in Carroll, IA, where Mary Lou has resided for almost 50 years. Some of Mary Lou's greatest accomplishments were her career working in the Kuemper High School library and her many volunteer activities with St Lawrence Parish, St Anthony’s Hospital auxiliary, and area nursing homes. She also enjoyed working for Carroll County during elections for many years. Mary Lou will be remembered for her devotion to God, her quick wit, her fierce independence, and her Chocolate Chip Wheaties cookies (a favorite of her grandchildren). Mary Lou is survived by her children: Mark (Deb) Harman, Jeanne (Bill) Hammen, Joyce (Dave) Baughman, Michael (Sandy) Harman, and Jeffrey (Deanne Naumann) Harman, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, her brothers: Bernard Kadolph, Larry (Grace) Kadolph, Ronald Kadolph, and a sister, Rita (Darrell) Allen; many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Donald in 2009; her brother, Eugene Kadolph; and sister-in-laws: Fran Kadolph, Beverly Kadolph, Karen Kadolph; and brother-in-law Robert Harman.
