Jack Grote, 86 of Carroll, died early Thursday morning at Accura Healthcare of Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 30, 2020 at St. John Paul II Parish - St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Patrick Behm. Con - Celebrant will be Fr. Gary Snyder. Casket Bearers will be Jack's family. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with Military Honors conducted by the Breda American Legion. A public viewing without greeting the family will be from 9:45-10:15 a.m. prior to the Funeral Mass. Those attending the Funeral Mass are required to abide by current social distancing guidelines and are required to wear a face covering. John (Jack) Grote was born November 12, 1934 at Carroll, IA. John (Jack) was the son of Herman and Colette (Schettler) Grote. He grew up in Mt. Carmel community and attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School and graduated in 1952. On September 8,1956 Jack was united in marriage to his sweetheart Doreen Pietig at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Roselle, IA. With this union they had three children. Jack started basic training for the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, CO. After basic training he was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC and was part of the 82nd Airborne in the Honest John Missile Division. He was also a member of the Breda American Legion Post 607. After returning home from North Carolina the couple made their home in Carroll where Jack was engaged in farming on the family farm west of Mt. Carmel. He also did some truck driving for C.W. Bedford and custom farming. He enjoyed going to exotic animal sales, fishing, camping and especially going to the Iowa State Fair. He also enjoyed traveling to Mesquite, Nevada with Doreen for their winter retreat. Jack loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s activities. The last couple of years Jack resided at Accura Healthcare of Carroll where he was well taken care of by their wonderful staff. Jack was an active member of St. Lawrence Parish. Left to celebrate Jack’s life is his wife of 64 years, Doreen Grote of Carroll, their children: Rick (Jill) Grote of Carroll, Mike Grote of Carroll, Joni (Clare) O’Rourke of Slater, IA. Seven grandchildren Patrick (fiancé Caroline), Stephanie (Ross), Nichole (Toby), Hannah (Alex), Haley, Benjamin, Chloe and 6 great grandchildren; his siblings: Jeanne (John) Rosener of South Sioux City, NE., James (Mary Ann) Grote of Cave Creek, AZ., Mary Sailer of Manning, IA., Bill (Nancy) Grote of Withee, WI., Alice (John) Hamilton of Jefferson, IA., Judy (Duane “Butch”) Olberding of Bonita Springs, FL, Ted (Peggy) Grote of Gibson City, IL., his sisters-in-law: Joyce Grote of Minooka, IL, Joleen Gerdes of Carroll, IA., his brothers-in-law Bill (Judy) Pietig of Glidden, IA, Lyle Vonnahme of Carroll, IA., as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended relatives. John was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Leonard and Evelyn Pietig; his brothers: Paul, Ralph, Leonard and Norbert, sister Lorraine Vonnahme; sisters-in-law: Luella Grote, Irma Grote, Marlita Grote and Karma Pietig. Brothers-in-law: Charles Gerdes, Ronald Pietig and Leonard Sailer.
