Fred was born on April 28, 1943 at Gary, Indiana, the son of Edward and Elinor (Polite) Caventer. He spent his younger years in Gary, Indiana, graduated from high school in 1961 and later attended Indiana University.

In 1965, Fred began his 33 year career with J C Penney. He started in the Village Store and later moved to the downtown store in Gary, Indiana in 1968. From there he became personal manager of the Dixie Square Mall in Harvey, Illinois and two year later was promoted to assistant manager in Roseland, Illinois. In 1976, Fred became the GMM of Penney’s in Council Bluffs where he spent a couple years and then moved to the South Roads Store in Bellevue, Nebraska.

On December 15, 1979 he married Sherry Sporrer in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Following their marriage Fred managed stores in Alliance, Nebraska and Sidney, Nebraska, before Fred’s last assignment in Red Wing, Minnesota where he was the store manager until his retirement in 1998.
Following his retirement, Fred and Sherry operated an antique mall in Red Wing before settling in Lidderdale, Iowa.

After retiring, Fred’s passion was family, camping, and fishing. He and his family spent many weekends and summer vacations at the Box Butte Reservoir in Hemingford, Nebraska. Fred also worked part time on the grounds crew at the Carroll Country Club; a job he thoroughly enjoyed.
Fred spent the past six months at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City. The staff and residents became very special to him; especially his roommate Stan Gordon and tablemate, Mary Toyne. Everyone at the nursing home enjoyed daily visits from Fred’s special buddy, his dog Degan. When he was able Fred always enjoyed taking Degan for rides on his golf cart and going for drives in the golf cart around Lidderdale.

His greatest joy was spending time with his family, attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and cheering for the Chicago Bears.

Fred is survived by his wife Sherry Caventer of Lidderdale; his daughters: Deb (Rick) Close of St. Petersberg, FL, and Pam Serafyn of Largo, FL; his mother, Elinor Caventer of Tucson, AZ; his step-children: Scott Snyder of Carroll, Dawn (Scott) Epperson of Missouri Valley, and Todd (Shirley) Snyder of Carroll; his step-daughter-in-law, Shelly Snyder of Phoenix, AZ; his grandchildren: Michael (Niki) Serafyn, Patrick Serafyn, Kara Close, and Kally Close; his step-grandchildren: Nate (Sarah) Epperson, Christopher Snyder, Steven Snyder, Jerod Snyder, and Jada Snyder; his great-grandchildren: Gavin Serafyn, Madison Epperson, and Baby Boy Epperson, due in July; his sister, Janet Mertz of Tucson; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Tom (Joan) Sporrer of Council Bluffs, Karen (Ed) Heim of Carroll and Robyn (Mike) Brinker of Carroll; his close friends, Paul and Chris Daniel of Lidderdale; as well as his friends and Shady Oak Care Center, many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

During Bernard’s lifetime, he farmed, had a dairy operation, had a cow/calf operation, and raised hogs. He retired in 1992. He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

Sherry, Fred will be greatly missed by a lot of people as he touched the lives of a lot of us. We shared many great times and he will be surely missed. As a J.C. Penneys manager he took his job very seriously and so he did with life. You and Fred went out of your way to help many people over the years and never asked for anything in return. You and Fred will be greatly rewarded in heaven. Fred is at peace now and can enjoy endless time doing his favorite hobby of fishing the great waters of heaven. Love You,your brother Tom

Sherry, I have tried so many time to do this and stopped. Fred was a brother-in-law that I could call friend. I loved him so much. Many a time I would just need to talk and he would listen. The respect he showed me and Tom will never be forgotten. And Sherry, you are such an inspiration to all of us. The love and kindness you gave to Fred thru his hardest days were overflowing with the thoughtfulness that the two of you have always shared with everyone. You are one of a kind! God Bless You and your family. Joan

Dear Sherry, Sherry's children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Fred's children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, if there are any, I would like to take this time to share some thoughts, remembrances, memories that are near and dear to me and that were near and dear to my, now deceased husband, Jerry too. We had special times of endearment of times spent together both with Fred and Sherry and with Gary and Nancy Adams and all of our children. Sherry and Jerry had a special and unique bond via the APD/School Resource Officer for the Alliance, NE Police Department. My association with Fred was with/through the Alliance J C Penny store of which Fred was the Manager. He was always kind, always willing to be of assistance while being patient, pleasant, and always going and giving the extra mile. On the personal level, I especially enjoyed the times we all went fishing and camping. These were very relaxing and refreshing times of restoration in our many varied activities of daily living! It is always nice to be able to spend time with people you can relax with, love, and laugh with and build cherished memories with whom that will stand the test of time! Death is sweet parting, but the memories and times spent together are always a dear reflection of special times together that only the ones doing the sharing can fully appreciate! It is always nice to see and experience the growth and expansion of our families through the years! The more fitting and note-worthy is the reflection and heart-warming fact that we all weathered the storms of life and came through them unscathed! We all participated in the annual Heritage Days activities in one way or another. We all enjoyed making/eating the funnel cakes. Heritage Days was an annual event experienced by one and all and by communities throughout the Western Panhandle of Nebraska. Fred gave all of himself in each and everything he participated in. He leaves a legacy of dependable, trust-worthy, unselfish, and always pleasant! He never worried about what his legacy would be; he left that to Father Time and trusted that his fruits would speak for themselves! My prayers and thoughts go out to each and everyone of Fred and Sherry' Caventer's family and extended family. Sincerely sent and meant Joy Stricker

Sherry, I don't see my first post so will try this again. My memories of Fred center around the time that you guys shared with Gary and Nancy. Every time you were there they would invite me over for Bluegill that Gary and Fred caught out of the lake. Had such fun tormenting Fred about who could eat the most fillets and who would get the last piece. Wish I could have gotten up to Box Butte when you were back. Maybe I could have out fished Fred. Not likely. Always enjoyed our time together and the fun we shared. I know he will be missed greatly. My love and prayers are with you and your family. Margaret

Sherry I'm very sorry for the loss of your great husband and a great uncle. My earliest memories of Fred are fishing with him, Scott, and my dad. He was such a hard worker in all he did. Never once did he pass up the moment to speak his mind or share his knowledge. Fred, I caught my largest fish ever the other day and I dedicate it to you. Bob Sporrer & family
