February 14, 1924 - January 8, 2021

Simons, age 96, of Carroll, died Friday, January 08, 2021 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Holy Spirit Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Kevin Richter assisted by Deacon Dave Prenger. Instrumental music will be by Jane Heithoff. Lectors will be Nicholas Halbur, Jason Mueller, and Meghan Shelley. Casket Bearers will be Elmer’s Grandchildren. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Visitation without the family present will be held from 1p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the church on Tuesday. Those in attendance are required to wear a face mask and abide by all COVID-19 restrictions. Those wishing to mail a memorial may direct it to the Elmer Simons Family C/O Sharp Funeral Home; 226 W. 8th Street, Carroll, IA 51401. A recording of Elmer’s service will be available on the Sharp Funeral Home YouTube Page at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqd2eeRJk5RTdEJoEooUoAQ Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, and online condolences may be left for Elmer’s family at www.sharpfuneral.com. Elmer, the son of Henry J. and Clara (Glass) Simons was born on February 14, 1924 at Carroll, Iowa. He grew up on farms around Carroll. Elmer graduated from Carroll High School in 1941. After high school he started farming for a few years before enrolling at Creighton University, and then St. Stanislaus Jesuit Seminary in Florissant, Missouri. After feeling called to a different life path, Elmer returned to the Carroll area and continued farming; however, Elmer’s faith continued to be a vital part of his life, attending mass daily and leading the rosary before mass. On August 16, 1951 Elmer was united in marriage to Leola Baumhover at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. To this union four children were born: Greg, Denise, Claudia, and Monica. Elmer continued farming and being active in his farming operation for the majority of his life. Elmer enjoyed reading. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Legion of Mary, Secular Franciscans, and Saint Faustina Study Group. He was a member of St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. Elmer is survived by 3 children, 7 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren; they include: son: Greg (Connie) Simons of Carroll; grandchildren: Brent Simons of Carroll; Tyler (Sarah) Simons and their children: Halle, Macy, and Kaylie of Carroll; Meghan (Troy) Shelley and their children: Collin and Peyton of Waukee; daughter: Denise (Ron) Mueller of Bettendorf; grandchildren: Mike (Kyann) Mueller and their children: Aria, Shepherd, and Knox of Bettendorf; Dr. Jason (Kristen) Mueller and their children: Lauren, Luke and Ryan of Bettendorf; daughter: Claudia Halbur of Carroll; grandchildren: Nick (Joanna) Halbur and their children Grace and Jackson of Omaha; Amy (Dr. Mark) Abraham and their children Mirabel, Lucy and Josephine of Carroll. Also surviving are sisters-in-law: Kathleen Simons of Carroll, Ruth Ormondroyd of Oregon, Rita Prenger of Carroll; brother-in-law: Richard (Mary) Baumhover of Carroll, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife Leola in 2009, daughter Monica in 2012, son-in-law Joseph E. Halbur in 2016; his parents, Henry and Clara Simons; sister: Helen (Ned) Collison, brother: Marvin J. Simons; his parents-in-law: A.H. and Josephine (Kanne) Baumhover; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Denis A. Baumhover, Alfred (Florence) Baumhover, Margaret (Mylo) Hyland, and Louis A. Prenger.
