Bill Badding, 72 of Carroll, died early Friday morning at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, surrounded by his family. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at St. John Paul II Parish - Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Kevin Richter. Con-Celebrant and Homilist will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Mass Servers will be Jack Badding and Brock Badding. Music will be by Dr. Franklyn Busby, Pastoral Musician and the Holy Spirit Resurrection Choir. Lectors for the funeral mass will be Deb Koster and Jim Berning. Gift Bearers will be Bill’s grandchildren: Will Badding, Claire Albers, Zach Badding, Lauren Albers, Tanner Badding, Aurora Badding, Macy Badding, Brynn Badding, Dawson Badding, and Jillian Benton. Eucharistic Ministers will be Mary Jo Berning and Joni Badding. Casket Bearers will be: Jerry Reiman, Steve “Hawk” Venghaus, Jim “Rock” Irlmeier, Bill “Kahuna” Beck, Ed Kugler, Tom Louis, Walt Sides, and Dave “Zip” Sehmel. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with Military Honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Friends may call at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll after 4 p.m. on Monday where there will be a rosary at 7 p.m. by the Carroll Knights of Columbus. Additional visitation will be held from 9-10:15 a.m. on Tuesday at Holy Spirit Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left at the church for the Carroll American Legion. Following the luncheon at the Holy Spirit Bishop Greteman Center please join Bill's family at Kerp's in Carroll. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolence may be left for Bill's family at www.sharpfuneral.com. A son of William and Rose (Schroeder) Badding, William R. Badding was born on October 8, 1946 in Carroll, Iowa. Bill spent his younger years in Arcadia where he attended St. John’s School and later graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in Carroll. Bill served in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 until 1968 and was a Marine Corps Sniper. While serving in combat during the Vietnam War he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. In addition to the Purple Heart, Bill received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Following his honorable discharge he returned to Iowa where he attended Iowa State University and then moved back to Carroll where he was employed at Badding Construction. On June 7, 1969, Bill was united in marriage to Mary Ann “Mardy” Shields at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake, Iowa. Bill and Mardy made their home in Carroll where Bill managed the Carroll Municipal Golf Course and also held other various jobs. For 42 years, Bill owned and operated Kerp’s Tavern in Carroll which today is operated by his sons. He loved fishing, especially his family fishing trips to Akaska, South Dakota to the family cabin. Bill also enjoyed golfing, riding his motorcycle, fast pitch in his younger years and of course socializing with his family and many friends at Kerp’s. Bill was a member of the Carroll American Legion, Legion Color Guard, Past President of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce, Member of the Carroll Knights of Columbus, and a member of St. John Paul II Parish – Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. Left to celebrate his life is his wife of 50 years, Mardy Badding of Carroll; his children: Dr. Jen (Ross) Badding-Benton of Abingdon, MD, Bill (Heather) Badding of Dedham, Mike (Jessica) Badding of Carroll, Ann (Chad) Albers of Plattsmouth, NE, Ben (Chas) Badding of Carroll and Jake (Liz) Schlater of Warner Robins, GA; his grandchildren: Jillian Benton, Will Badding, Zach Badding, Tanner Badding, Aurora Badding, Dawson Badding, Claire Albers, Lauren Albers, Macy Badding and Brynn Badding; his sisters: Mary Jo (Pete) Berning of Arcadia, Rosie (Lon) Diers of Carroll and Janet Badding of Elk Hart, IN; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Joni Badding of Carroll, Elmer Bedford of Ft. Dodge, Surge Badding of Carroll, Pat (Maurine) Shields of Omaha and Jean Shields of Darwin, MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Kathryn Bedford; his brothers: Don (Carolyn) Badding, Joe Badding, Bob Badding and Jack Badding in infancy; his niece, Samantha Badding and his nephews, John Berning and Jack Badding.
