Betty Louise Stoelting was born on February 18, 1928, on a farm near Bristol, South Dakota, the second child of Edwin and Rose (Anderson) Stoelting. When she was eight years old, the family moved to Iowa, first to a farm near Schaller, and then to Sac City. Betty graduated from Sac City High School in 1945. She then attended Iowa State Teacher’s College (now the University of Northern Iowa) for two years, receiving a teaching certificate. She taught school in various locations, at the same time earning her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She later earned a Master’s degree from Creighton University. Betsy loved teaching school, mostly kindergarten, and could tell many amusing stories of her interaction with the children. On retirement from her teaching career in California she returned to Iowa and for many years cared for her mother in Carroll. She also assisted children with tutoring. Betty never married, but she was a great help to all of her family, and her many nieces and nephews love her dearly. One of the highlights of her life was a trip to England and Ireland with her oldest niece, Elaine. Betsy was an avid reader, especially mysteries, and she owned an extensive book collection. She also enjoyed writing children’s stories, one of which was published. She enjoyed swimming and golfing in younger years, and watching tennis and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Her faith was very important to her and she was a faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church for many years. She is survived by her sisters: Carol Nicholson of Hutchinson, KS, Marlene (John) Hemmer of Mission, TX, and Phyllis Skinner of Lake City; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Jean Stoelting, and nephews Bris and Reid Nicholson.
