Leo C. Staiert

Leo Staiert, 89 of Carroll, died Saturday, September 20, 2014 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Dale Reiff. Music will be by Kate Cuddy and the St. Lawrence Choir. Mass Servers will be Leo’s great-granddaughters: Kara Daniel and Megan Klocke. Lector for the funeral mass will be David Pepin. Gift Bearers will be Leo’s great-grandchildren. Eucharistic Ministers will be: Beth Klocke, Diane Hannasch, and Lynette Lehrter. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Leo’s granddaughters: Beth Klocke, Erin Eischeid, Amy Abrisz, Tammy Daniel, Allison Staiert, Stacie Pepin, Jill Daniel, Rhonda Daniel and Erin Daniel; as well as his neighbors, Les and Rose Marie Butler. Casket Bearers will be Leo’s grandsons’: Mike Daniel, Lenny Daniel, Nick Daniel, Andrew Staiert, Dorin Albrisz, Mike Klocke, Brandon Eischeid, and David Pepin. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 p.m. on Tuesday where there will be a rosary at 6:30 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. Born on December 30, 1924 at Carroll, Iowa, Leo Cletus was the son of John and Anna (Niehaus) Staiert. He grew up in rural Carroll and received his early education at St. Francis Catholic School in Maple River. Lefty, as he was known to his family and friends, worked on the family farm and later worked for his sister and brother-in-law, Hilda and Joe Bruch on their family farm near Fonda. On September 12, 1951 Leo was united in marriage to Alice Renze at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Roselle. The couple farmed for 49 years in the Lytton and Roselle areas. Leo was active in Holy Angels Parish where he served in various capacities. For years, he was the voice of “Bingo” at the annual Roselle Parish Celebration. In 2000, following his retirement, Leo and Alice moved to Carroll where they were members of St. Lawrence Parish and blessed with wonderful neighbors. Leo had a passion for baseball and enjoyed a good game of cards with family and friends. He also enjoyed car rides to view the countryside scenery and wildlife. Leo cherished family and thoroughly enjoyed sharing in the lives and activities of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Leo is survived by his wife of 63 years, Alice Staiert of Carroll; his children: Pam (Leonard) Daniel of Carroll, Joyce (Greg) Brincks of Carroll, Patrick Staiert of Carroll, and John (Vickie) Staiert of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Hilda Bruch of Carroll and Ethel (Ray) Reiff of Carroll; his sisters-in-law: Antonette Staiert of Sac City, Ella Mae Staiert of Harlan, Alice Staiert of Carroll, Harriet Staiert of Centennial, CO, and Marie Huffman of Audubon; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends. Leo was preceded in death by his parents: his sisters: Loretta Reiff, Agnes Gehling, Rosina Wiederin, Marita Heires, and Anita Bellinghausen; his brothers: Elmer, Henry, Walter, Edwin, and Paul Staiert; and his siblings in infancy: Eleonor, Arthur, and Joseph Staiert.
