Joyce Aden

Joyce Aden, 83 of Carroll, died Saturday, August 15, 2026 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at Holy Spirit Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Patrick Behm. Music will be by Jane Heithoff, Sophie Christensen and Holly Aden. Lectors will be Kellen Balfour, Courtney Aden-Colburn, and Shelby Dickson. Gift Bearers will be Luke Aden, Rachel Aden, Drew Aden, Melissa Schroeder, and Jill Miller. Honorary Casket Bearer will be Charli Aden. Casket Bearers will be: Sean Aden, Jack Aden, Connor Aden, Drake Aden, Parker Aden, Jackson Colburn, and Nate Balfour. The Carroll County Nurses Association will form and honor guard for the Funeral Mass. Burial will be in the Carroll City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:15 a.m. on Wednesday at the church prior to the Funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left at the church for a later designation. Joyce Ann (Malm) Aden born March 15, 1943 to Rose (Jonas) and Harry Malm in Pocahontas, Iowa. Joyce grew up in Pocahontas with her sister Mary Jo and brother Chuck. She attended Pocahontas Catholic School growing up. Joyce met the love of her life, Ervin Aden while working at the local Drive-In Theatre. They were married Nov. 24, 1962, by Fr. Nash at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic church in Pocahontas. Soon Joyce and Erv started a family and settled in Badger, Iowa. She was blessed with four children: Jill, Jeff, Scot, and Ted. Joyce was the homemaker and Erv worked at the local grain elevator. Later they moved to Somers, Iowa for Erv’s work and then moved to Lidderdale where they spent most of their adult lives. They moved into a condo in Carroll later in life. When the oldest kids reached junior high, Joyce decided to go back to school and became a nurse. Joyce started working as a nurse at St. Anthony Hospital. After a short while, she took a job at the Family Health Clinic. Soon Dr. Eric Paulson started at the clinic and Joyce became his nurse. Joyce loved being a nurse and working with Dr. Paulson, following him when he opened his own clinic. She worked at the clinic until retiring. Joyce’s faith was always an important part of her life. She was an active member of the parishes she belonged to; teaching CCD classes, assisting with parish activities, and participating in parish retreats. She was able to live her faith as a nurse- using her time and talents to assist others in their time of need. Family was also important to Joyce. She enjoyed times with family, holidays, visits, phone calls, texts, and emails. Joyce is survived by her husband Ervin Aden; her children Jill Aden, Carroll, Jeff (Elaine) Aden, Carroll, Scot (Lori) Aden, Carroll, and Ted (special friend Melody), Lead, SD; grandchildren Sean (Rachel) Aden, Kellen (Nate) Balfour, Jack (Holly) Aden, Connor Aden, and Courtney (Jackson) Aden-Colburn; step-grandchildren Jill Miller, Melissa Schroeder, Shelby (Aaron) Dickson; great-grandchildren Drake Aden, Luke Aden, Drew Aden, Parker Aden; step-great-grandchildren Rylie Miller, Izac Schroeder, Izabella Schroeder, Evie Dickson, and Kinnick Dickson; sister-in-law Bonnie Malm; nephew Matt Malm; nieces Jennifer (Doug) Diers, Anne (Pete) Collison and Kate (Brian) Ford. Joyce in preceded in death by her parents Rose and Harry Malm; parents-in-law Eddie and Johanna Aden; sister Mary Jo Malm; brother Chuck Malm; brothers-in-law Vernon and Robert Aden; and sister-in-law Betty Mengel.
