Douglas Eugene, son of Merlin and Dorothy (Irlbeck) King, was born January 4, 1962, in Audubon, Iowa. Doug grew up on a farm south of Coon Rapids in Viola Township and graduated from Audubon High School in 1980. For the next several years, he lived and farmed with his family.
On August 20, 1994, Doug was united in marriage with Cheryl Daniel at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Doug and Cheryl made their home near Viola Center for 2 years before moving to their present farm south of Coon Rapids.
Doug loved to visit and tell stories. Being “The Farmer” and farming was his life and happy place, working sun-up through the moonlight hours. He loved taking his John Deere Gator rides through his land to plan for planting, watching the growth of the crops from seed to harvest, and checking his livestock. Sometimes just a leisure ride around his happy place is where Doug found peace and loved life. He never took time to just play and relax because that didn’t make him money. When he would leave the farm, you could find him at farm sales and the sale barn. Being a “numbers guy”, Doug always worked “a deal” and was excited and proud to tell about the deal he made. Doug was smart, honest, and extremely hard-working. He was a kind, caring, and giving man. He always found the best in everyone, he trusted and believed in people, and provided opportunities for them to have a “chance”. Doug will be missed by so many, but one thing he has always made sure of is “it’ll be alright”.
Doug is survived by his wife Cheryl of Coon Rapids; two brothers Denny (Jerrine) King and Randy (Shelly) King, all of Coon Rapids; a sister Janice (Kenny) Knobbe of Auburn; and by several in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Ronnie King, twin sisters Judy King (at 6 months old) and Jody King (at age 28), his grandparents: Eugene and Hattie King & Edward and Katherin Irlbeck and Cheryl’s parents Roland and Marian (Loew) Daniel.
