Catherine Wittry

Catherine Mary Wittry, 92, of Carroll, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Monday, July 20, 2026, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026, at St. John Paul II Parish – St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Fr. Timothy Schott will Celebrate the Mass. Music will be by Kathy Halbur and Sherry Loughran. Lectors for the Funeral Mass are Jayne Wittry and Amanda Westrum. Gift Bearers will be Catherine’s granddaughters. Casket Bearers will be Catherine’s grandsons. Burial is in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Friday at the church prior to the Mass. Catherine was born on July 7, 1934, in Carroll to Bernard (BL) and Rose (Kanne) Baumhover. She graduated from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School in 1952. Catherine married the love of her life, Dale Wittry, on January 21, 1954, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. They farmed near Breda until 1973, when they moved to Carroll. She worked at General Electric shortly after the plant opened in Carroll until she turned off the lights with the plant's closure. She worked as a school lunch lady at Kuemper High School until she retired. In retirement, Catherine enjoyed volunteering at the St. Anthony Hospital gift shop and at New Hope Village. She was a member of RSVP and an honorary lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Catherine’s other hobbies included crocheting, quilting, sewing and playing cards with family and friends. She made a baby blanket and quilt for each of her 21 grandchildren for their birth, graduation and wedding in addition to the numerous baby blankets she made for the babies born at St. Anthony Hospital and for Seniors in Carroll nursing homes. Catherine is survived by her 10 children: Mary Jo Wittry of St. Louis, Sandy (Jeff) Cayler of Carroll, Dean (Monica) Wittry of Urbandale, Janet (Dennis) Dietrich of Mt. Vernon, Susan (Steve) Nuetzmann of Wall Lake, Richard (Becky) Wittry of Indianola, Mark (Michelle) Wittry of Dubuque; Margaret (Kevin) Anderson of Kansas City; Judy (Paul) Wagner of Carroll; and Timothy (Ann) Wittry of West Des Moines; 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers: Gerald (Alice) Baumhover; Charles (Jean) Baumhover; Steven (Norma Baumhover); sisters-in-law Marceal Wittry, Joan Wittry and Jane Wittry; many nieces and nephews; and her many cousins throughout Carroll County. Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Wittry; her daughter, Ann, in infancy; her parents; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bernard and Magdalene (Snyder) Wittry; her brothers, William Baumhover and Paul Baumhover; and grandchildren, John Foster Mason and Anna Louise Mason; her brothers-in-law: John, Eugene, Romayne and Kenneth Wittry; and sisters-in-law, Della Nieland and Annette Baumhover.
