Dr. L. B. “Westie” Westendorf, age 91, a long time Carroll dentist, died Monday, August 11, 2008, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Thursday, August 14, 2008, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Con-celebrant will be the Rev. Msgr. R. Mark Duchaine, Vicar-General of the Diocese of Sioux City, and Priests of the Diocese of Sioux City assisted by Deacons of the Diocese of Sioux City. The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 A.M. Thursday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass. Lector will be Gary Schon. Gift Bearers will Dr. Westendorf’s children, Mike Westendorf, Roxie McDaniel, and Rae Jean Karel. The Carroll Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will form an honor guard at the church for the funeral mass. Casket Bearers will be grandsons, Chris Westendorf, Mike Westendorf, Tom Westendorf, Geoff Karel, Kevin Karel, and Scott Karel. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 P.M. Wednesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Wednesday by St. Lawrence Parish. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for St. Anthony Hospital Foundation. Dr. Westendorf was born on December 24, 1916, at Halbur, Iowa, the son of Henry and Minnie (Espenhover) Westendorf. He attended St. Augustine School in Halbur, graduated from Carroll High School, and then graduated from the Creighton University School of Dentistry in Omaha in 1940. He returned to Carroll to establish his dental practice and was married to Florence M. Nagl on May 29, 1941, at Saint Peter and Paul Church in Carroll. He was called to the U.S. Army in September 1942 and served during World War II with the Army as an Oral Surgeon and was honorably discharged in May 1946 at the rank of Major. Following military service he returned to his dental practice until his retirement in 1987. He was also associated with other Carroll business ventures including being co-owner of the Carroll Theaters. Dr. Westendorf was elected to the Carroll City Council in 1964 and served as Mayor Pro-Tem from 1968 until retiring from the council in 1975. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Carroll American Legion, Iowa and American Dental Associations, and the Ft. Dodge District Dental Society. He was a former member of the St. Anthony Hospital Board, President of the Carroll Country Club Board, member of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce, and member of the Creighton University Alumni Board. Dr. Westendorf was ordained a Deacon of the Diocese of Sioux City on May 24, 1986, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City by Bishop Lawrence D. Soens. He ministered to his Parish and St. Anthony Hospital and Nursing Home. Survivors include his children, Michael Westendorf of Naples, Florida, Roxie McDaniel of Columbia, Missouri, and Rae Jean Karel and her husband Ken of Shoreview, Minn; six grandsons; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Albert Nagl of Carroll, Gertrude Nagl of Carroll, Omer and Grace Langenfeld of Carroll, Sister Lorene Lourdes of St. Louis, Missouri, and Helen and Frank Meyers of Clear Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence Westendorf, in April 1999; a son-in-law, Ed McDaniel; brothers, Walter and Alver Westendorf; a sister, Sister Audrey Gray F.S.P.A.; and three brothers in infancy.
