Gerald Rettenmaier, age 98, a long time Carroll pharmacist, died Sunday, November 9, 2008, at Swan House Assisted Living in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M., Saturday, November 15, 2008, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Jean Ullrich. Gift Bearers will be his grandchildren, Lauren, Erin, and Matthew Rettenmaier. Eucharistic Ministers will be Cecil and Luella Menke and Marilyn Foley. Casket Bearers will be John Maginn, Paul Maginn, David Bruner, Mike Wittrock, Jr., Mike Murphy, and Mike Finan. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 P.M. Friday. A rosary will be prayed at 6:30 P.M. Friday by the Carroll Knights of Columbus followed by a Christian wake service at 7 P.M. Friday by St. Lawrence Parish. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for St. Lawrence Parish. Mr. Rettenmaier was born on March 19, 1910, at Carroll, Iowa, the son of Frank J. and Anna C. (Arts) Rettenmaier. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1928 and graduated from the University of Iowa School of Pharmacy in 1931 and was elected to the Rho Chi National Honorary Pharmaceutical Fraternity. He managed Walgreen Drug Stores in three states before returning to Carroll in 1940 to join his father at the Rettenmaier Drug and Pharmacy Store, a family business started in 1900. Mr. Rettenmaier operated the business until 1970 when he retired due to Carroll’s Urban Renewal Program. In retirement he worked part time at the Center Pharmacy and St. Anthony Regional Hospital Pharmacy. In 1981 he received a 50 year award from the Iowa Pharmacy Association. He was united in marriage to Helen Louise Maginn on May 18, 1957, at St. John Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his son, Dr. Lawrence Rettenmaier and his wife Brenda of Waukee; grandchildren, Laura, Erin, and Matthew Rettenmaier; a sister-in-law, Ruth Maginn of Omaha, Nebr.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen Louise, in May 1993; a sister, Louise McDonald; and brothers, Wilbur, Paul, and Louis Rettenmaier.
