Thelma Francis, age 90, of Carroll, Iowa, and formerly of Breda, Iowa, died Saturday, January 3, 2009, at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, Iowa. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Father Joe Dillinger. Lector will be Nicholas Janning. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Caryl Francis-Niedens and Lisa Francis. Eucharistic Minister will be Ione Koster. Casket Bearers will be Richard Janning, Leon Hackfort, Norbert Janning, David Koster, Nicholas Janning, and Steve Daiker. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 5 P.M. Tuesday. There will be a Christian wake service at 6:30 P.M. Tuesday by St. Bernard Parish. Mrs. Francis was born on September 14, 1918, at Breda, Iowa, the daughter of John H. and Mary (Determan) Wessling. She spent her younger years in the Breda community and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1936. In 1941 she was married to Clarence “Pete” Francis. She then worked as a beautician in Des Moines for several years. For more than thirty years she resided at Mallard View in Carroll where she worked in the kitchen. Mrs. Francis enjoyed needle work, baking, cooking, and music. Survivors include a son, James Francis of Greenville, Mississippi; granddaughters, Caryl Francis-Niedens and her husband Lyle of Westwood, Kansas, and Lisa Francis of Great Bend, Kansas; two great grandchildren; a sister, Ione Janning of Carroll; and a sister-in-law, Bette Wessling of Littleton, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert Francis; one son in infancy; a granddaughter, Lori Francis; brother, Arnold F. Wessling; sister, Annabelle Wessling; daughters-in-law, Carla Francis and Jean Francis; and brother-in-law, Norbert Janning.
