Donald Harman, age 81, of Carroll, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Friday, August 21, 2009, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lectors will be granddaughters, Shannon Hammen, Anne Baughman, and Katie Hammen. Gift Bearers will be granddaughters, Lindsey Harman-Wood, Andrea Harman, Sarah Baughman, and Emily Harman. Eucharistic Ministers will be Mike and Sandy Harman, and Larry Kadolph. Honorary Pallbearers will be granddaughters and granddaughters-in-law, Lindsey Harman-Wood, Andrea Harman, Shannon Hammen, Katie Hammen, Anne Baughman, Sarah Baughman, Emily Harman, Sarah Harman, and Donna Hammen. Casket Bearers will be grandsons and a grand son-in-law, Christopher Hammen, Tyler Harman, Matthew Hammen, Ben Harman, Michael Baughman, and Andrew Wood. Graveside Services will be at 4 P.M. Friday at St. Mary Cemetery in Eldora, Iowa, with military honors conducted by the Eldora American Legion. Officiating at the graveside will be Father Paul Baldwin, Pastor of St. Mary Parish at Eldora. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Thursday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Thursday by the Carroll Knights of Columbus. There will be a Christian wake service at 6:30 P.M. Thursday by St. Lawrence Parish. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or church for the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. Mr. Harman was born on December 26, 1927, at Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Annamae (Schwinger) Harman. He spent his younger years in the Iowa Falls community and graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1945. He entered the U.S. Navy in January 1946 and served at the end of World War II as a mechanic. He was honorably discharged from the Naval Reserve in November 1952. On August 12, 1950, he was married to Mary Lou Kadolph at St. Mary Church in Eldora, Iowa. Mr. Harman began his career with the Great Plains Gas Company in 1952 in the Cedar Falls area and moved to Coldwater, Michigan, in 1966, and was moved to Carroll in 1968 to serve as District Manager. In retirement he worked part time at the Carroll Health Center, Carroll Super Wash, Earl May Nursery, and drove cars for Griffith Ford. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Knights of Columbus, and Carroll American Legion. He served St. Lawrence Parish as a lector and usher. Don loved to make people laugh and was notorious for his impersonation of “Foster Brooks, The Lovable Lush”. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Harman of Carroll; his children, Mark Harman and his wife Deb of Peoria, Ariz., Jeanne Hammen and her husband Bill of Grinnell, Joyce Baughman and her husband Dave of Bloomington, Minn., Mike Harman and his wife Sandy of Decorah, and Jeff Harman and his special friend, Deanne Naumann of Littleton, Colorado; twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother, Bob Harman of Zearing; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard Kadolph of Story City, Larry and Grace Kadolph of Eldora, Ron and Karen Kadolph of Eldora, and Rita and Darrell Allen of Iowa Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents.
