Rita Grossman, age 89, of Carroll, Iowa, died early Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Friday, March 5, 2010, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Father Timothy Schott. Lector will be Nate Guerdet. Gift Bearers will be Micki Brus, Keri Guerdet, and Kristen Grossman. Eucharistic Ministers will be Susan Wessling, Randy Theulen, and Cheri Theulen. Casket Bearers will be Keith Grossman, Chad Grossman, Chris Grossman, John Wessling, Louis Wessling, and Justin Gomez. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 P.M. Thursday. A rosary will be prayed at 4 P.M. Thursday. There will be a Christian wake service at 6 P.M. Thursday by St. Lawrence Parish.
Mrs. Grossman was born on November 14, 1920, at Breda, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Mary (Welte) Wessling. She spent her younger years in the Breda community and attended St. Bernard School and later received her G.E.D. Diploma. Prior to her marriage she worked for a short time in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. On April 26, 1945, she was married to Felix W. Grossman at St. Joseph Church in Carroll with Msgr. P.T. Lynch officiating. The couple farmed in the Carroll area until 1980 when they moved to Carroll. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Parish Ladies Guild. Rita enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, playing cards, baking, and her flowers.
Survivors include her sons, Randy Grossman and wife Mary of Carroll and Dan Grossman and wife Kathy of Carroll; her grandchildren, Micki Brus of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Keri Guerdet and husband Nate of Ankeny, Kristen Grossman of Ames, Keith Grossman and wife Cathy of Carroll, Chad Grossman and wife Jessica of Ankeny, and Chris Grossman of Camp Pendleton, California; eight great grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Arlene Sondgeroth of Las Vegas, Nevada and Margaret Brown of Escondido, California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix Grossman, in October 1986; her parents; a sister, Caroline Schreurs; brothers, Alfred Wessling, Rudy Wessling, Ray Wessling, Hugo Wessling, and Albin “Bud” Wessling; two brothers-in-law; and six sisters-in-law.
