Joseph Riesselman Jr., age 90, of Carroll, died Thursday, May 5, 2011 at his residence in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Monday, May 9, 2011 at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Ken Behrens. Gift Bearers will be Joe’s grandchildren, Catie Riesselman and Matt Riesselman. Eucharistic Ministers will be Ken and Vicki Behrens. Casket Bearers will be Duane Kruse, Kyl Knobbe, Bill Stork, Joe Riesselman, Jon Sailer, and Joel Sailer. Burial will be at 2 p.m., Monday at Holy Family Cemetery near Lidderdale with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Visitation will be on Monday at Holy Spirit Church from 9 a.m., until mass time. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll.
Born on January 3, 1921, at Halbur, Iowa, Joseph H. Riesselman Jr. was the son of Joseph and Celia (Muhlbauer) Riesselman. He grew up near Halbur and attended St. Augustine School. Following his formal education Joe helped his father farm in the Halbur area. He served in the United States Army during WW II and received a Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. In 1947, Joe was honorable discharged. Joe was united in marriage to Catherine Beyer on January 22, 1947 at St. Augustine Church in Culver City, California. Catherine died in July of 1969. Joe married Helen Hornick on June 9, 1972. Joe was a grain and livestock farmer in the Lidderdale area for nearly his entire lifetime. He loved to dance, enjoyed polka music, playing cards but his true love was for the land and farming. Joe was a member of the Holy Spirit Parish, and the Carroll American Legion, Maurice Dunn Post # 7.
Survivors include his children: JoAnn Riesselman of Carroll, and Marva Riesselman of Carroll; his daughter in-law, Donita Riesselman of Nevada; 2 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; his sisters: Sophia Sailer of Charter Oak, and Lila Handlos of Manning; his brother, Alfred (Velma) Riesselman of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews and other extended relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; Catherine in July 1969, and Helen in June, 1999; his son, Michael Riesselman, and two sons in infancy: Alan and Nicholas Riesselman.
