LaVerne Sporrer, 67 of Dedham, Iowa, died Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dedham. The Celebrant will be Fr. Andrew Hoffmann, assisted by Deacon Louis Meiners. Music will be by the St. Joseph’s Choir with Marcy Anderson as organist. Mass Servers will be Jared and Megan Rotert. Lectors will be Amanda Sporrer and Tammy Sporrer-Ozel. Gift Bearers will be LaVerne’s sisters, Helen Wiederin and Doris Peterson. Eucharistic Ministers will be Linda Sporrer and Donna Ankenbauer. Casket Bearers will be LaVerne’s brothers: Don, Jim, Wayne, Bob, Paul, Dale, and Dick Sporrer. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Dedham with military honors conducted by the Dedham American Legion and the Manning V.F.W.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m., Tuesday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m., followed by a Christian Wake Service by the parish at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. Born on June 8, 1944 at Carroll, Iowa, LaVerne was the son of John and Bonita (Heithoff) Sporrer. He attended St. Joseph’s School in Dedham and later graduated from Kuemper High School with the Class of 1962. Following his formal education LaVerne served in the United States Navy, and was stationed at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego and served overseas in Vietnam. On November 7, 1970 he married Rosalyn Kemper at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton, Iowa. In his working years, LaVerne worked at Farmland Foods and also farmed Southwest of Templeton. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, Iowa Hawkeye Sports, slow pitch softball, tractor pulls, trips to the casino, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Dedham American Legion, and the Manning V.F.W.
Survivors include his children: Scott Sporrer and fiancé Allison Aschinger of Dedham, Stacy Sporrer of Storm Lake, Kristin Platz and husband Ryan of Waukee, Kevin Sporrer and wife Alycia of Wall Lake; 7 grandchildren: Carly, MaKenna, Shayne, Landon, Adalyn, Reagan, and Reese; 7 brothers: Don Sporrer of Denison, Jim (Kathy) Sporrer of Pontiac, IL, Wayne Sporrer of Westside, Bob (Linda) Sporrer of Dedham, Paul (Bonnie) Sporrer of Dedham, Dale (Jan) Sporrer of Dedham, and Dick (Sharon) Sporrer of Dedham; two sisters: Helen (Ralph) Wiederin of Carroll, and Doris (Ron) Peterson of Pleasant Hill; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister in-law, Rosalie Sporrer.
