Harold Leiting, age 88 of Carroll, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence Choir. Lector for the funeral mass will be Harold’s son, Ken Leiting. Gift Bearers will be Harold’s granddaughters, Amanda Leiting and April Schultes. Eucharistic Ministers will be Lucille Leiting, Steve Seidl, and Dan Sturm. Casket Bearers will be Harold’s grandsons: Jake Leiting, Josh Leiting, Greg Leiting, Ben Leiting, Jeremy Leiting, Dennis Leiting, Jason Schultes, and Gerard Schultes. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. on Friday where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born on February 20, 1924 at Arcadia, Iowa, Harold Anthony was the son of Bernard and Caroline (Sanders) Leiting. He spent most of his youth on his parent’s farm south of Arcadia. He graduated as salutatorian of his high school class. He served his country in the 1940’s for a short time as a cook in the United States Navy. On October 28, 1947 he married Delores Klocke at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Templeton. The couple farmed near Templeton and in 1958 moved to their farm four miles south of Dedham. In 1990 he and Delores moved to Carroll and enjoyed their retirement. Harold had served as recording secretary on the board of the Dedham Farmer’s Cooperative, and on the board of the AMPI. He was also an insurance agent and board member of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Roselle. Harold was an optimist and always tried making the best of whatever situation he was faced with. He shared his philosophy by spending time helping others and giving back to his community. Harold was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church while living in Dedham and served as a choir member, Eucharistic Minister and on the parish board. After moving to Carroll he was active at St. Lawrence Church as a choir member and Eucharistic Minister. He was an active leader and participant with RSVP and received the Shining Star Award from the State of Iowa. He had led singing groups in visits to nursing homes. As a part of RSVP he videotaped county supervisor meetings and Carroll High School Board Meetings. Harold played Santa on the phone at Christmas time for many children. He was on the Kuemper Blue Ribbon Committee and was a charter member of the Carroll Area Catholic Schools Foundation “Steve Garbier’s Builder’s Club”. He read the paper daily and enjoyed doing the puzzle page, especially Soduku and Jumbles.
Harold enjoyed having his family around him, most recently at a Memorial Day family reunion. He was a loving father and husband, treasured always by his family. Harold is survived by his children: Kenneth (Bonnie) Leiting of Rio Rancho, NM, Connie Leiting of Omaha, NE, Carol (Joe) Schultes of Carroll, David (Lucille) Leiting of Carroll, Tom (Donna) Leiting of Eldridge, Randy (Jeanie) Leiting of Ackworth, Jim (Jami) Leiting of Burlington, Karen (Bill) Boulanger of Mahomet, IL, and Allan Leiting of Boone; his daughter-in-law, Victoria Laibinis of Dacula, GA; 19 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Williams of Roselle; three brothers: Dennis (Marie) Leiting of Carroll, Ron (Shirley) Leiting of Westside, and Vincent (Alvina) Leiting of Westside; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Walter Riesselman of Vail, Lawrence (Beth) Klocke of Carroll, Joan Hoffmeier of Council Bluffs, Diane (George) Sunderman of Harlan, Lois (Bob) Sellers of Indianapolis, IN, Betty (Nick) LaVan of Dresser, WI , Carlene (Larry) Goecke of Clairmont, FL, and Alvin (Louanna) Klocke of Faribault, MN, as well as many other extended relatives.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 59 years Delores (Klocke) Leiting; infant daughter, Mary; his son, Richard Leiting; his brothers: Alvin Leiting, and Loren Leiting; his sister, Lucille Riesselman; and his in-laws: Barb Leiting, Esther Leiting, Virgil Williams, Louis and Marion Grossman, Norbert and Marjorie Sturm, Vernie Irlmeier, and Dale Hoffmeier.
