Fred Gardner Mankin, 90, of Carroll died Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at Regency Park Nursing Home in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Pastor Dennis Bailey of the First United Methodist Church in Carroll will officiate. Casketbearers will be Fred’s sons: Larry, Kevin, and Scott Mankin, as well as Fred’s son-in-law Steve McCrea. Honorary Casketbearers will be Fred’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren and Robert Mankin. Burial will follow in the Carroll City Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll on Friday, December 6, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Visitation will resume at noon on Saturday and continue until the time of the service.
Memorials may be left at the funeral home to be directed to St. Anthony Hospice or the Carroll American Legion.

Born on November 21, 1923 in Pomeroy, Ohio, Fred Gardner Mankin was the son of Floyd Benjamin and Mabel Mitch Mankin. Fred graduated from Pomeroy High School and enlisted in the United States Army serving during World War II until his honorable discharge. On August 23, 1947 Fred was united in marriage to the love of his life, Mavis Ness at Pomeroy, Ohio. The couple lived in Ohio, Minnesota and South Dakota before moving to Carroll where Fred worked for the United States Postal Service. Fred then worked as a truck driver for L.A. Smith until his retirement. Fred loved to fish and to spend time in the sun. He also enjoyed walking, weekend drives with his family, and music. Fred was a passionate Ohio State Buckeye fan his entire life, and he never missed an opportunity to either attend a game or watch it on television. Fred was a long-time member of the Carroll American Legion.
Survivors include his children: Larry Mankin and his wife Susan of Columbia, MO, Robert Mankin and his wife Hella of Fresno, CA, Kevin Mankin and his wife Anne-Marie of Earlham, Anna McCrea and her husband Steve of Ames, and Scott Mankin and his wife Julie of West Linn, OR. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 52 years Mavis, and his brother Kenneth Mankin.
