Ruth Elizabeth Rutten, 85 of Carroll, died Saturday, December 5th at her home in Carroll surrounded by her family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Craig Collison. Con-Celebrant and homilist will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Music will be by Kate Cuddy, St. Lawrence Choir with Sherry Loughran as cantor. Mass servers will be: Carter Soppe, Kenna Soppe, and Heidi Kraus. Lectors for the funeral mass will be Melissa Bradford and Holly Janning. Gift Bearers will be: Laura Rutten, Natalie Rutten and Jamie Hatfield. Eucharistic Ministers will be Denny and Joan Rutten. Casket Bearers will be: Jim Rutten, Jeff Rutten, Matt Hatfield, Jason Feldman, Mike Sibbel, and Tommy Hauser. The St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary and the Carroll Catholic Daughters of the Americas will form and honor guard for the funeral mass. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 4 p.m. on Tuesday where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. by the Carroll Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass.

Born March 5th, 1930 at home in Halbur, Iowa, Ruth was the daughter of John H. and Katherine (Soppe) Sibbel. Ruth spent her younger years in the Halbur area and attended St. Augustine School and graduated from St. Angela’s Academy. She then lived in Omaha and worked for the Mutual of Omaha Company.
On April 7th, 1956, she was united in marriage to Richard Rutten at St. Augustine Catholic Church by Father Paul Bruening. Following their marriage the couple resided in the Carroll community where Ruth helped Richard build the family business, Rutten’s Vacuum Center.
Ruth was a devoted homemaker and housewife raising four children as well as secretary to the business. She enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ruth was a patient, kind, serene, soft spoken person. On her last days, she never complained of her pain.
Ruth had a deep devotion to her faith and was an active parishioner through the years at St. Lawrence. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, St. Anthony’s Auxiliary, and St. Lawrence Resurrection Choir.
Ruth is survived by her husband Richard of Carroll; her children: Alan (Cindy) Rutten of Pleasant Hill, Dennis (Joan) Rutten of Carroll, James (Mary) Rutten of Bellevue, NE, Lisa (Philip) LaPenna of Waterford, MI ; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; her siblings: Lorraine Wempe of Halbur, John (Margie) Sibbel of Halbur; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Robert Rutten of Omaha, Roland (Lois) of Davenport, Janice Brink of Richfield, MN, Donna (Denny) Le Gros of Omaha, Mary (David) Schmeiser of Carroll, Joleen (Jerry) Hauser of Carroll, Karen (Gary) Kunecke of Carroll, Thomas (Suzanne) Rutten of Naples, FL; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers-in-law: Clarence Wempe and Dick Brink; Sister-in-law: Mary Ann Rutten; nephews: David Sibbel and Eric Schmeiser.
