Born on January 29, 1933 on the family farm south of Breda, Iowa, Melvin was the son of Leo and Florence (Mueggenberg) Nieland. He grew up near Breda, and in 1950 he graduated from St. Bernard’s Catholic High School in Breda. After his graduation Melvin started farming with his father and brother. On September 20, 1952, Melvin was united in marriage to Donita Tiefenthaler at St. Bernard’s Church in Breda. The couple made their home southwest of Breda where Melvin was engaged in grain and livestock farming. In 1991 he and Donita retired to the Carroll community.
Melvin enjoyed watching his beloved Chicago Cubs, playing cards, morning coffee with his friends, and “breaking even” on his frequent trips to the casino. He also enjoyed supporting Kuemper Catholic Schools, Holy Spirit Parish, and St. Bernard’s Parish in Breda. Most of all Melvin enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, and the time he spent with his family. Melvin will be remembered for his deep devotion to the Catholic faith, through his daily prayer of the Rosary; a value he passed onto his children and grandchildren. Melvin was a member of the Carroll Knights of Columbus, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
