Obituary

Born March 31, 1930, he was the son of Bernard and Catherine (Rotert) Meiners. He grew up in the Dedham-Willey area and graduated from St. Mary’s School in Willey in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army July 8, 1953 and was stationed at Wurzburg, Germany. He was discharged on May 20, 1955.

Bernard married Dolores S. Halbur on January 24, 1956 at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. After being married Bernard and Dolores lived 3 miles north of Dedham for two years. In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

On August 9, 1980, Bernard married Marita Eickman at Annunciation Catholic Church in Coon Rapids. In May 2011, Bernard and Marita moved off the farm into the town of Coon Rapids, Iowa. They made their home there for 14 years. In April 2025, they moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

He is a current member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Dedham, a member of the Dedham American Legion Post #20, and a member of the Manning VFW. In July 2001 Bernard, being a Korean Veteran, had the privilege to go on the Military Honor Flight to Washington DC. Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

We all loved Aunt Doris and have so many happy memories visiting all of the cousins and family growing up. Iowa has always been like a second home while traveling with my family while my parents were in the Air Force. We would go visit the farms and family for our 30 day leave. I will always treasure all of the memories we had with the Broich family and send our sympathy during this difficult time.

Two traits that described Doris were Integrity and Compassion. Integrity was a part of Doris’ “fabric”. She just could not tell a lie, and would not just tell what you wanted to hear. She always told the truth, but in a disarming, helpful and mild mannered way. Being compassionate was really Doris’ trademark and it was genuine! Working with Doris at the St. Anthony Hospital Food & Nutrition department, she was so kind and understanding to all ages, from the Nursing Home Residents to our young employees to the point many staff affectionately spoke of her as “Grandma Doris”. I saw Doris as a role model to me and to those she worked with. She reflected St. Anthony’s Franciscan heritage through her courteous service to others. I found her to enrich all of our lives by providing her compassionate care through the kind words, the smile on her face, and the comforting feeling you get when you spoke with her. It’s like you were home! Doris was a selfless person, who was a role model for all of us, her friends and co-workers had nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for her and we will miss her. Personally, I am a better person for working with her and knowing her. We will keep Doris and her family in our prayers. Matt Loneman

Doris was my second mom when I was growing up. We lived across the street and my little brother and I spent a LOT of time at their house. She let us dress up in her old gowns, make messes, made snacks for us and watched Dark Shadows too! She was very giving and I loved her laugh. Glad that you are now home and able to keep an eye on everyone, Doris! God bless you all. Prayers and hugs.
