Florence Schmitz, age 99, of Carroll, died Sunday, June 18, 2017 at the Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll, Iowa.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Fr. Timothy Johnson of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll will officiate. Casket Bearers will be Chris Hensel, Dan Hensel, Ben Hensel, Luke Hensel, Kris Schmitz, Kim Schmitz, Kathy James, and Kevin Schmitz. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Suzanne Vogelsmeir, and Brian Vogelsmeir. Burial will be at the Carroll City Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and continue until the time of the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Carroll Community of Concern Food Bank.

Florence Schmitz was born on November 2, 1917 in Maple River Township, Carroll County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Hugo and Oriana (Knowlton) Liechti. The family moved to Sac County where she graduated from the Delaware Township Consolidated School District at Nemaha, Iowa in 1935.
Florence married Lawrence Schmitz of Arcadia in 1937. The couple farmed in the Arcadia, Mt. Carmel, and Auburn communities and moved to their home in Mt. Carmel in 1957. While living in the Mt. Carmel community she was a leader of, and helped organize the Mt. Carmel Merry Makers 4-H Club. The Schmitz’s moved to their home in Carroll in 1989. She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish, and Parish Ladies Guild. Mrs. Schmitz enjoyed attending sporting events of all the schools in the Carroll area. She was a gifted seamstress and tailor-made clothes for her children. She loved to embroider and crochet, and was an avid flower gardener, all at which she was a perfectionist.
Florence is survived by her children: Bob Schmitz and his wife Alice of Oakdale, Minnesota, and Oriana Hensel, and her husband David of Kansas City, Missouri; seven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Norma Berger of Carroll, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence Schmitz; her brothers: Ray and Wilbur Liechti, and her sister Alice Hansen.
