Jim was a World War II veteran, serving with the occupation forces in France and Germany for two and a half years. He was also a Korean War Veteran who served with the 96th FA Battalion on the frontlines for 5 years. During intense fighting near the end of the Korean war he was awarded the Bronze Service Star for meritorious service. In his career, he reached the rank of Captain.

He planted, pruned, and cared for his trees personally alongside his children. Jim always said that Fraser firs were the best and added that the beauty of a Christmas tree is in the eyes of the beholder.

In 1958, they moved to the farm they purchased four miles east of Dedham. They were the parents of six children: Daniel, Dale, David, Cathleen, Christine, and Gary. Dolores passed away January 21, 1978.

Just recently he was presented with a Quilt of Valor at Thomas Rest Haven, and at the age of 95 he still enjoyed attending the Legion meetings.

Bernard loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Holiday gatherings were a treat for him to get to see most of them at one time. In his spare time Bernard enjoyed gathering black walnuts in the fall and kept busy shelling the walnuts during the winter. Family and friends benefited from the fruits of his labor.

I’m sorry to hear about Jim’s passing. Mr. Strautman was a big influence in my life. I grew up in Carroll on Court Street down the hill from his home by the water tower. He encouraged me to do what I loved and ended up back in Carroll Chief Engineer at Carroll Broadcasting. Whenever I would see him he would always stop and visit. In high school I would help him film and video tape the sports. I would stop and see all the slides he took. He was really nice about sharing his interests. I made a couple trips with him to the tree farm by Ames. He was a good man. Rest In Peace Jim. Bob Grote
